Job Responsibilities: The Health, Safety & Environmental Leader will lead and direct the HSE efforts for this food production facility. As an integral member of the Plant Management Team the HSE Leader will provide leadership and strategic direction, will support and advise site management with regard to the HSE implications of the business activities. Responsible for formulating a proactive, local HSE strategy that drives the location to become an environmentally sustainable, healthy and safe operation.
- Foster a positive site safety and environmental culture that embraces continuous improvement.
- Ensure all site personnel, contractors and visitors adhere to all applicable safety and environmental procedures and policies.
- Support company strategy to ensure all HSE directives, policies, and initiatives are effectively incorporated at site level.
- Develop, implement, and execute HSE annual site objectives, improvement plans, new or revised policies, or other initiatives in conjunction with site operations management and business unit HSE Manager.
- Manage all environmental permits and program requirements specific to the site.
- Lead implementation and management of site ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Undertake at regular intervals audits/inspections of the site (including inspections of machinery, equipment in use, and work systems in operation) with various site personnel to ensure continuous HSE compliance and improvement. Where appropriate, develop appropriate corrective and preventive actions with operations team.
- Identify site HSE training needs, develop appropriate resources, and execute training sessions for employees and management staff as required.
- Organize and oversee site safety committee meetings.
- Lead the site HSE Incident Investigation process including supporting site supervisors with the investigation of HSE incidents; leading (or collaborating with corporate staff on) more complex investigations or more serious incidents.
- Communicate HSE incidents and corrective actions in a timely, thorough, and effective manner.
- Partner with Human Resources to monitor the status of all open Workers Compensation claims and coordinate activities to minimize lost and/or restricted work days.
- Assist the site security effort, including review of physical site security and security situations as they develop.
- Manage expenses of safety programs.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions.
- Track site HSE Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and drive site performance to ensure all HSE KPIs are met while assisting the site leadership team in meeting other KPIs around production, quality and costs.
- Maintain HSE records to ensure adherence to corporate polices and/or regulatory requirements. Includes, OSHA 300 log, incident records, safety metrics, training, inspections, permits, etc.
- Advise project management staff on HSE requirements in the design, introduction, modify and decommissioning of manufacturing processes, equipment, and materials
- Liaise where necessary with various external agencies or resources (Government Agencies, Group insurers, etc.).
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or closely related degree required.
- An advanced degree and/or recognized EHS certification or documented training (e.g., PE, CIH, CSP, etc.) is a plus.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive responsibility in an EHS related career with strong working knowledge of OSHA, EPA and local regulations.
- EHS experience in a food or beverage related manufacturing environment a major plus.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience with ISO 14001, NFPA, and ANSI.
- Prior experience in developing and implementing environmental, safety programs and effective training curriculum.
- Proficient in all aspects of safety and industrial hygiene.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with all levels of the organization, including the plant floor, as well as customers and outside professionals.
- Demonstrated leadership, people-influencing, project management and ability to develop and deliver effective EHS-related training.
- Strong verbal, written, presentation and English language communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant federal, state and local occupational environmental, health and safety laws and regulations as they apply to industrial organizations.
