JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: MUSIC DIRECTOR
Reports to: The Pastor
Function: To enable the congregation to worship and serve God through the gift of music, particularly during services of worship.
THE MUSIC DIRECTOR IS ABLE TO:
- Engage in long term planning of the Church music program with the Pastor.
- Consult regularly with the Organist, Pastor, and/or Moderator of the Worship Committee to plan services far enough in advance for adequate music preparation.
- Advise the Office Manager of all music to be used in worship services in a timely manner, for inclusion in the bulletin.
- Direct choir for Sunday worship services and all extra church services, including (but not limited to)
Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
- Conduct choir practice each week.
- Direct the handbell choir (Chancel Bells) in preparation for participation (but not limited to) during worship services.
- Coordinate special music programs, including the invitation of guest musicians, with the organist and Worship Committee.
- Create and coordinate a children’s music program.
- Be available when needed as possible for: funeral services at the church; Presbytery meetings when held at FPC; Community Services when held at FPC.
- Choose and buy service music within the budget (consult with Worship Committee chair for purchase approvals.) Organize the choir room, including music and choir robes.
- Provide input to the Worship Committee by October 1 each year on financial needs of the music program for the following year’s budget.
- Communicate with the Pastor on any problems and needs.
- Participate in annual job evaluation process with the Personnel Committee.
- Provide two weeks’ notice of planned absences to the Pastor so that a replacement can be found. Weeks off are not to be scheduled the week before or during Christmas and Holy Week..
The Music director is provided with two weeks of paid vacation per year.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music.
- Previous experience in directing choral music and in church music is preferred.
COMPENSATION:
- Salary negotiated per experience; 20-25 hours per week; salary $25k - $32k annually
