What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at Freeborn?
Custodians are responsible for maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment in County buildings.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleans offices, courtrooms, meeting rooms, hallways and stairways of County buildings
including dusting, vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning vents, and washing walls and
baseboards.
- Wipes and washes ledges, shelves, furniture, counters, woodwork and walls. Cleans
woodwork, ceiling strips and light fixtures. Cleans carpets. Sweeps sidewalks and stairs.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, break rooms, lounge areas, elevators and drinking
fountains which includes using correct chemicals and cleaners to properly disinfect.
- Cleans interior and exterior of all windows, glass and mirrors.
- Strips, finishes and polishes floors.
- Collects and disposes of all garbage and recyclables.
- Operates floor machine, carpet cleaners and floor scrubber machines.
- Performs special cleaning requests for employees as directed by supervisor.
- Provides security for County buildings by locking and unlocking doors and offices, closes the
facilities by turning out lights, ensures office areas are closed, and closes and locks main
doors.
- Assists in set-up and tear-down for special events.
- Cleans and maintains floor machines and vacuum cleaners.
- Maintains and distributes supplies such as paper products, soaps, towels, chemicals and
cleaning supplies.
- Attends training/education and staff meetings as required.
- Maintains knowledge of all relevant OSHA, Right-To-Know, and AWAIR requirements.
While these are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be
called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.
Position Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation procedures.
- Ability to consistently follow safety and security policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of operation of cleaning machines, equipment and supplies.
- Knowledge of lock and security equipment and procedures.
- Skill in cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, offices, buildings, etc. - Skill in prioritizing work.
- Skill in self-motivation.
- Ability to work independently under limited supervision for results achieved.
- Ability to apply work standards and judgement within goals set by supervisor.
- Ability to establish effective relationships and communication with supervisor, co-workers,
county staff and building visitors to carry out work tasks.
Education and Experience
- Requires a high school degree or GED
Licenses/Certifications
This position will require the acquisition and maintenance of the following additional certificates/licenses:
- Right-To-Know Training
Equipment and Tools
- Frequent use of vacuum and mop
- Occasional use of floor machine
- Intermittent use of carpet cleaner, floor scrubber, ladder, allen wrenches, screwdrivers, razor
blade and window squeegee and scrubber
Physical and Mental Requirements
This job typically requires: sitting, standing, walking, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing,
typing, and seeing. This position is moderate duty and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force
occasionally, and up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
