JOB TITLE:  Registered Nurse Supervisor

Department:  Nursing

Job Relationships: 

Supervised by: Director of Nursing 

Supervises: Geriatric Nursing Assistants; Certified Medicine Aides, LPN’s, and RN’s

 

 

Purpose of your job position:

Your responsibility is to direct and coordinate the delivery of professional nursing service on assigned unit under the supervision of the Director of Nursing. You will work within general methods and procedures and exercise considerable independent judgment to adapt and apply the guidelines to specific situation. The work requires knowledge of the policies, procedures, and regulation of nursing programs, supervisory techniques, personnel policies and procedures.

 

Your function is a first line administrative supervisor whose responsibilities includes but not limited to directing the nursing and patient care activities of subordinates, i.e. licensed practical nurses, geriatric nursing assistance, unit techs and registered nurses, if applicable.

 

The primary purpose of your job position is to assist in planning, organizing, developing, and directing Nursing service in accordance with the current applicable federal, state, and local guidelines and regulations, and as may be directed by the Director of Nursing or Administrator to assure the highest degree of quality patient care can be always maintained.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Listed below is an outline of major duties you will be required to perform as Registered Nurse Supervisor. You are delegated the authority to carry out your assigned duties under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing/ Assistant Director of Nursing.

 

Even though your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete as possible. However, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities.

 

 Registered Nurse Supervisor Duties

  • Selects and assign staff, ensure equal employment opportunity in hiring and promotion. 
  • Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees. 
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of complete work assignments and work techniques. 
  • Identifies staff development and training needs and ensures that training is obtained. 
  • Ensure proper labor relations and conditions of employment are maintained. 
  • Maintains records, prepares reports and composes correspondence relative to the work. 
  • Develops, implements and evaluates nursing programs, nursing care plan, and objectives for the work area. 
  • Supervises and participates in the provision of general nursing care service. 
  • Supervises admissions, conducts assessment of patient needs, and initiates nursing care plans.
  • Evaluates and documents patient progress and prepares discharge summaries and transfer notes. 
  • Serves as liaison between staff and other personnel within the facility at large and as an advisor to other disciplines. 
  • Assesses needs of personnel, supplies, and equipment and physical facilities for budget planning.
  • Participate in clinical conferences, workshops, seminars and related forums. 
  • Participates in facility security procedures. 
  • Performs related work assigned.

 

Manage unit

  1. Assist in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating and directing unit’s activities.
  2. Act as resource person and role model for nursing staff. 
  3. Assist in developing and maintaining nursing objectives and standards. 
  4. Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, patience, visitors, family members, private duty nurses etc. as necessary. 
  5. Assure that department personnel, patience, visitors, etc. always follow established policy and procedures 
  6. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warrant and positive working environment. 
  7. Review complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to department director 
  8. Assist in setting standards for DON
  9. Evaluate emergencies and determine emergency measures to be used, including the use of chemical mechanical restraints. Notify physician and record and follow orders. 
  10. Make daily rounds to ensure that prescribe treatment is being properly administered by nursing personnel. Evaluate patient’s physical and emotional status, record findings in patient’s chart and update physician of changes. 
  11. Make written and oral reports/ recommendations to the DON/ADON concerning the operation of the nursing unit. 
  12. Assure that unit is maintain in a clean and safe manner for residents’ comfort and convenience. Assuring equipment and supplies are maintained to perform their respective duties. 
  13. Assist in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished. 
  14. Assure that establish infection control and aesthetic techniques are followed by all personnel ‘s when isolation procedures become necessary. 
  15. Assume the authority responsibility and accountability of directing the Healthcare Department.

 

Conduct, communication and coordination

 

  1. Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that the department services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residence. 
  2. Assist surveyors and inspectors to facilitate regulatory compliance as per the direction of the Director of nursing. 
  3. Assure effective interaction with residents and families. 
  4. Demonstrate respect and compassion in every interaction. 
  5. Conduct oneself with the highest degree of honesty and integrity in every interaction. 
  6. Demonstrate a passion for caring as evidenced by interaction with coworkers, residents, residents’ family members and visitors. 
  7. Meet with department personnel, on regular schedule basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or improvement of services. 
  8. Coordinate nursing service with other departments. 
  9. Assure the unit stocks are always at maximum levels and supply/equipment are ordered as needed. 
  10. Work with facilities consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as directed by DON/ADON. 
  11. Arrange for a diagnostic, therapeutic, consulting services, as ordered by physician either outside the facility or inside facility per policy. 
  12. Notify the attending physician and DON/ADON when a patient is discharged without approval. Assure that appropriate documentation is made per facility policy. 
  13. Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to maintenance immediately.

 

Patient care

  1. Provide direct care as staffing patterns demand
  2. Adhere to facility policies and procedures and participates in facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Program. 
  3. Ensure that patient rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, the individuality, privacy, property and civil rights including that to wage a complaint are followed by our department personnel. 
  4. Review and evaluate your assigned personnel and make recommendations to department director. 
  5. Maintain confidentiality (by following current HIPAA laws) of all pertinent patient care information to assure patient rights are protected. 
  6. Notify the patients physician as well as patients guardian/ representative of any changes in condition i.e. ill, injured, as outlined within our established policies. 
  7. In case of death provide end of life care, offer support to family, may call the funeral home as requested by the family or otherwise outlined by our establish policies. Assured that the body is properly prepared/cleaned for pick up. 
  8. Make independent decisions regarding nursing care within the scope of practice of your licensure. 
  9. Notify physician of patient’s accidents/ incidence. Fill out and complete accident/ incident report forms on all such occurrences and chart information on patient’s medical record as outlined in our established policies and procedures. 
  10.  Assess patient’s condition or change in condition and chart as required. 
  11. Order patient medications 
  12. Prepare/administer medications and treatment as ordered by physician (verify ID of patient before administration of medications) 
  13. Admit, transfer and discharge patient. Assist in arranging transportation, packing, etc. complete required forms upon patients’ admission, discharge, transfer, etc., file in the patient’s chart and/or forward relevant information to appropriate department. 
  14. Administer professional service such as, Catheterization, tube feeding, suction, I.V. applying, wound dressing, colonoscopy and drainage bags, collect sputum, urine, cultural specimens per facility policy. 
  15. Check food in patient rooms that families/ visitors brought in per facility policy. 
  16. Make rounds with physicians and assist in examination and treatment. 
  17. Notify physicians of auto shop orders on specific medication’s as establish per facility policy.

 

Reviews and documentation

 

  1. Encourage attending physicians to review treatment plans, record and sign physician orders, progress note etc.
  2. Give/ receive nursing report upon reporting in an ending shift duty hours.
  3. Ensure monthly summaries are completed per given schedule. 
  4. Answer telephone inquiries per policy. 
  5. Chart nurses notes in informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided as well as the patient response to treatment. 
  6. Receive verbal orders from physicians and chart and transcribed per facility policy 
  7. Review patient care plans, MAR/TAR at least monthly and make recommendations to DON/ADON. 
  8. Check and monitor in patient charts, specific medication and treatments, i.e. Procrit, lovenox. 
  9. Report med errors, documentation errors, physician order errors to DON/ADON. 
  10. Review care plans for appropriate goals, problems, approaches etc. to assure appropriate nursing care is being delivered. 
  11. Complete and review all end of month paperwork in turnovers including 
    1. Schedule of all lab routines
    2. Review, update physician order summary, and sign physician order summary review form. 
  12. Review medication records for complete list of information, accuracy in transcription of physician orders, and inherence to stop order policies. 
  13. Review physician orders, transfer/pre-admission admission information etc. for completeness.
  14. Perform routine charting as required. 
  15. Registered Nurse Supervisor route task include, but is not limited to:
    1.  daily morning and evening rounds with nursing staff

 

Supervise and educate

  1. Orient new patient/family members as necessary
  2. Assist in orientation of newly assigned personnel as well as supervise other nursing personnel assigned to your unit, assuring care is delivered adequately and in accordance with the current applicable federal, state and local guidelines and regulations and our policy and procedure. 
  3. Make daily assignments for GNA on unit.
  4. Complete employee reviews timely. 
  5. Actively participate in quality improvement process for the facility 
  6. Make sure labs, x-rays, pacemaker checks and other diagnostic procedures are scheduled done and followed up timely. Notify MD of missed test and document results of test appropriate per facility policy 
  7. Perform other responsibly related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.
  8. Abides by the standards and practices as set forth in the Corporate Compliance Code 

of Conduct.

  1. Adheres to the Organizations Policies and Procedures covering Privacy and Security in Compliance with HIPAA regulations.

 

Working conditions:

  1. Physical demands
    1. Requires ability to move intermediately throughout the workday
    2. Sitting, standing, bending, talking, hearing, feeling, scene, pulling, lifting, carrying, pushing climber climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, twisting. 
  2. Environment: works in a well-lighted/ventilated work area as well as throughout the nursing service areas. 
  3. Hours: As required by DON and should be willing to work beyond normal working hours when necessary. 
  4. Continuing Education: attend and participate in continuing education programs and facility meetings to update facility functioning according to federal, state, and local regulations 
  5. Access continuing education opportunities, appropriate to discipline and responsibilities 
  6. Subject to infectious diseases and substances 
  7. Subject to falls burns from equipment

 

Qualifications:

  1. Education: – 
    1. Registered Nurse Supervisor must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and must be licensed by Maryland Board of nursing to practice as a registered nurse or license practical nurse 
  2. Experience: 

In addition to charge nurse skills below the Registered Nurse Supervisor must also possess the following knowledge and skills: 

  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practices
  • Knowledge of scientific principles in specialized techniques used in the practice of nursing  
  • Knowledge of medications and treatment
  • Knowledge of current literature in field of nursing in long term care facility administration
  • Knowledge of training and supervisory techniques
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of equal employment practices
  • Ability to instruct, direct and evaluate employees
  • Ability to carry our detailed instructions
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of nursing care
  • Ability to stay calm during stressful situation
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and compose correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to maintain favorable public relations
  • Previous experience in the supervision of staff and clinical patient care is require
  • Must be able to speak, read and write the English language
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personal, patience, family member, Visitors, government agencies in the general public
  • Must have knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures
  • Must be a strong leader and be able and willing to work harmony harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel
  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the facility
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm as well as be able to handle patients based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and we will to incorporate them into existing nursing practices
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and support agencies
