Overview

We are currently seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented Plant Design Engineer, with demonstrated equipment evaluation and skid design skills, to join our multi-disciplinary Advanced Technology group to develop advanced fuel cell-based power generation, carbon capture and hydrogen production systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops designs for process skids which incorporate process equipment, piping systems, instrumentation, and electrical enclosures.
  • Utilizes engineering design documentation (PFD's, P&ID's) and vendor supplied specifications to develop plant CAD models for plant site layouts, and mechanical fabrication drawings.
  • Uses ASME B31 piping codes to specify and select process stream pipe materials and sizes.
  • Maintain the overall plant design, including collaborating on a complete CAD model and control all the interfaces among the various plant sub-systems. Coordinate the designs among various engineers and outside groups.
  • Manages the top-level plant Bill of Materials (BOM) in conjunction with the CAD model of the plant. This includes both custom designed components and vendor supplied equipment on multiple skids.
  • Designs and develops custom piping and skid arrangements and analyzes designs utilizing a combination of engineering calculations, computer-aided engineering tools, and/or testing.
  • Specifies process equipment for advanced fuel cell systems in compliance with international codes and standards and project specifications. Equipment includes: rotating equipment (pumps, blowers, compressors), heat exchangers, process vessels, fuel processing system components, reactors, water treatment systems, etc.
  • Manages outside vendor fabrication of equipment in accordance with the technical requirements and project schedule. This includes periodically visiting vendor's production facilities to inspect product workmanship and witness equipment performance or other acceptance tests.
  • Directs mechanical designers assigned to assist with 3D CAD designs and drawing generation- including checking and approving released-to-build manufacturing drawings.
  • Ensures that systems are developed in accordance with best safety practices. This includes participating in Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) reviews, risk analyses, and other design reviews.
  • Supports system fabrication, installation, and commissioning activities when needed.
  • Prepares technical reports and presentations to communicate designs/results to internal and external stakeholders and assists with writing project proposals.

Qualifications:

Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related field required.

Experience: Minimum 8 years minimum of relevant work experience.

Required experience and characteristics as follows:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, chemical engineering processes, fluid and mass transport phenomena, and thermodynamics.
  • Proficient in deciphering and marking up Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFD's), Equipment Specifications, and Engineering Drawing Specifications.
  • Must have experience using pipe stress analysis software such as CAESAR II.
  • Must be knowledgeable and have experience designing to meet ASME B31.3 code requirements.
  • Experience with pipe sizing and selection of insulation and pipe supports.
  • Experience in design of pressure vessels to meet ASME Section VIII Div I requirements a plus.
  • Familiarity with EJMA standards is desirable.
  • Experience using FEA and hand calculations to perform structural analysis a plus.
  • Experience managing vendor equipment procurement to meet project schedule timelines.
  • A strong understanding of Hazardous Area Classification.
  • Experience routing conduits, power cables, instrumentation, and cable trays for outdoors applications.
  • Knowledgeable about domestic and international shipping requirements.
  • 3-D CAD modeling skills with Autodesk Inventor or similar CAD software preferred.
  • Understanding of skid installation site logistics including pipe weld inspections and use of cranes.
  • Knowledgeable in appropriate materials selection for a variety of process environments. Experience with materials selection for high temperature.
  • Detail-oriented problem-solving skills with initiative to take on responsibility and follow through
  • Team player who works willingly with others and keeps a positive, goal-focused outlook when tackling challenging, time-sensitive engineering problems.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to work effectively and openly with others, both internally and externally.
  • Flexible and adaptable to rapidly shift gears into multi-disciplinary roles based on current project requirements.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment where the principles of honesty, integrity, humility, curiosity, diligence, conscientiousness, and self-improvement persist.

Working Environment/Working Conditions:

  • Desk work using a computer with up to two days a week allowed from home.
  • Adjustable height work desk provided upon request.
  • Meeting occurring on-site and virtually (Teams, Zoom, Ring Central, etc.)
  • This position is located indoors and requires the ability to move between rooms within the same building, adhering to FCE's covid-19 safe practices - includes social distancing, face mask wearing, and other protocols.
  • Be able and willing to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as designated such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hats, respirator, and other PPE as required.
  • Other physical requirements (pushing, pulling, and bending) may be required to perform inspections, make connections, take photographs, or access installed equipment. Able to climb a ladder.
  • Occasional travel to the FCE-Torrington manufacturing facility and sited power plants.
  • Travel (5% to 15%) domestic or international - via car and/or commercial airlines.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a passport.
