GEM Corps Conservation Work Crew Leader
Full-Time AmeriCorps Member – 1700 hours
Name of Program: GEM Corps Workforce Development
Position title: Crew Leader
As a federally funded position, this position requires a full Criminal History Check before beginning program involvement.
Member Duties: The Crew Leader manages the day-to-day activities of 4-8 members of a conservation based work crew that completes hands-on service work for projects related to Science - Technology - Engineering - Mathmatics fields while earning certificates to develop professional careers. They will serve as a role model, facilitator, and educator to continually encourage high standards for members involved in community-based, service projects.

Qualifications:

• Strong communication skills - verbal and written
• Demonstrated strong leadership and supervisory skills to lead by example
• Experience in trail work and wilderness travel

• Mature judgment to solve problems while guiding others with diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Ability to assess tasks, develop work plans, delegate assignments, and monitor progress

• Experience with safety protocols and precautions related to hand and powered tools
• Dedication to complete the full term of AmeriCorps service

Requirements:

• Must be a US Citizen, US National, a Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US, or be authorized to work in the US.

• Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history check.

Work Schedule: GEM Corps Crew Leaders are expected to serve 30-40-hour work weeks over the duration of their term with occasional time spent over the weekends when weekday scheduling is limited. GEM Corps Crew Leaders will also participate in 1-5 hours of leadership/professional development training as a part of their 30-40 hours per week.

Team Leader Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Actively participate in technical and personal skills training, strive to further develop these skills in the field, and serve as a resource to mentor members.
• Support training and educational activities by facilitating learning opportunities.
• Coordinate and fully contribute to service projects to the best of their ability.
• Must serve safely, effectively, and efficiently to ensure that conservation projects are completed to a high level of satisfaction.
• Foster a positive crew dynamic and help mitigate conflict among crew members.
• Communicate effectively with crew members, program staff, and agency liaisons.
• Organize crew gear, tools, and work supplies throughout the season.
• Plan daily project schedules to maximize productivity, safety, and crew efficiency, in consultation with agency staff.
• Coordinate tools, equipment, and materials for service projects. Load vehicles properly. Do not leave needed tools behind and do not leave tools at the service site.
• Receive constructive feedback regarding project outcomes and crew progress.

Types of Work: Conservation crews will take part in trail building/ maintenance, habitat restoration/ invasive species removal, fuel reductions and fire safety, erosion control, green spaces initiatives, range management, recreation access, public interfacing, and other types of community-based conservation work. Crew leaders will be vital in selecting and building project sites with community partners, municipalities, and land management agencies.
