What are the responsibilities and job description for the Painter/Liner position at GATX?
Overview
Operates paint spray gun or uses hand brush or roller to apply paint to rail cars, car parts, assemblies and sub-assemblies.
Responsibilities
- Scrapes, wire brushes or buffs surfaces to be painted as necessary
- Blows off and checks cars to see that they are clean and dry before paint application
- Cover car parts with the necessary materials needed to prevent paint from getting on portions of car
- Use various techniques and tools that include paint sprayers, hand brushes and paint rolling stock to paint cars
- Assembles and dismantles painting tools and makes required adjustments as needed
- Mixes stencil paste and/or paint to proper consistency for pouncing or spraying
- Prepares and applies decals as required
- Changes tips on spray guns to attain specific spraying pattern
- Moves railcars with transfer table, trackmobile or winches
- Mixes paint with thinner solution according to formula
- Clean interiors of blast materials from railcars prior to lining
- Hooks up warm air ducts to car and starts furnance to cure newly applied lining as specified
- Complete wet paint mileage reading forms and paint audit forms
- Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner
- Communicates with supervisor as needed
- Comply with established safety policies, support continuing awareness for safety and when possible recommend changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs
Qualifications
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as IO instructions, FM instructions and work orders
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide two digit numbers
- Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results
- Knowledgable of railcar parts preferred
- Effective communication skills
- Basic computer knowledge
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions.
Physical Demand Requirements:
- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
- Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
- Must be able to safely lift (vertically) up to 51 lbs, regulary and safetly lift up to 85 lbs from ground to surface
- Must be able to push/pull (horizaontally) up to 140 pounds of force
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
- Must be able work in extreme temperature environments
- Must be able to physically enter confined space and work in enclosed environments
