The Sr. Reliability Engineer is a senior role that can work with minimal supervision. The incumbent will be expected to have skills that support GATX engineering’s data analytics and reliability analysis efforts and the ability to create and develop reliability plans and projects from a strategic perspective. This position will also leverage data analysis to influence railroads, government and industry rule-making authorities toward decisions in the business interest of GATX. The position is expected to significantly impact Safety, Quality, Delivery and Costs objectives with these efforts.
Responsibilities
Optimize the reliability of life-cycle maintenance on the GATX rail fleet:
- Analyze and track all key fleet performance indicators to drive strategic improvement to GATX SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost).
- Set and monitor quantitative metrics for fleet reliability goals.
- Utilize Weibull and other reliability software to manage GATX reliability program.
- Optimize the schedule and standard work for planned maintenance events.
- Analyze needs and prevent unplanned maintenance events.
- Support implementation of reliability benefits in GATX instructions, specifications, reporting, computer systems, policies, and process.
Support GATX Ops strategic initiatives with data analysis and implementation:
- Develop and maintain reliability reports and dashboards using PowerBI.
- Measure the effectiveness of engineering programs for impact on SQDC.
- Eliminate systemic defects to maintenance quality with Quality Assurance.
- Support Best Practice teams on measurable impact to SQDC.
Support GATX Commercial with fleet performance data analysis:
- Analyze maintenance cost trends.
- Provide analyses to customers in order to support qualification intervals, provide comparative analyses on components, etc.
Influence government and industry rule-making authorities toward the best interest of GATX, and support regulatory requests:
- Influence regulatory outcomes with reliable data metrics, industry committee participation, and task group leadership.
- Support Service Reliability Assessments requests from FRA
- Provide authorities with impact forecasts of proposed rule changes.
- Validate effectiveness of GATX tank car qualification and remediation programs with FRA officials.
Interaction:
- Executive and staff employees in engineering, quality assurance, information services, and continuous improvement
- AAR committee members and other participants
- FRA and AAR auditors and other officials
- GATX Vice President, Government and Industry Affairs
- Executive and staff employees in fleet management, investment analysis, sales
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
- B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in Engineering or other technical discipline with 10 years of related experience required
- Advanced level skills in Microsoft Excel
- Advanced level skills in Microsoft PowerBI
- Advanced level skills with statistics and formal methods of data analysis
- Certification in reliability engineering data analysis and modeling
- Experience with Rail car design and repair
- Familiarity with Rail car rules and regulations
Other (i.e., physical requirements, travel, etc. that is not covered above): This position is based in the Chicago Corporate office and considered hybrid with 60% in office attendance required. Minimal travel to maintenance facilities and industry committee meetings will be required, and employee must be physically able to climb on, inside, or under rail cars.
