Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead group of design engineers through project execution pertaining to new product introduction, new technology integration, and/or field issue resolution with a heavy focus on safety, quality and reliability verified by physical testing
- Provide first-stop technical feedback to engineers responsible for designing Low Speed Driveline components for wind turbines consisting of main bearings, main shafts, and bearing covers & seals
- Hold ownership of and drive lessons learned, best practices, and standardization into design related documentation such as design practices, drawings, and technical specifications
- Responsible for design, development, and testing/validation risk mitigation plans including DFMEA to prove component function and reliability considering system interactions and system reliability
- Ensure quality of new and revised drawings, BoMs, and specifications applying all GE and industry processes, standards, and best practices
- Work cross functionally, developing strong relationships with quality teams, manufacturing engineers, sourcing, suppliers, field support, and others to improve product quality and first-time yield
- Drive collaboration with System, Sub-System, and component Engineers to integrate components into overall turbine design while satisfying turbine and interface requirements.
- Maintain “Systems Thinking” mindset and higher-level turbine system requirements to understand the needs and implications of potential component changes and impacts to the rest of the machine.
- Support manufacturing, sourcing, and the field with issue resolution and quick corrective actions for design related causes (NCR, SDR, PAC)
- Drive quick, complete technical root cause analysis of field failures and identify design related corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Identify and execute cost saving ideas and strategies
- Drive efforts to introduce advanced technology, materials, manufacturing methods, and new design tools/methods to advance the strategic position of the team’s components
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering
- Minimum of 10 years mechanical analysis and design experience in industry
- Minimum of 5 years design experience in Driveline subsystem components or similar components
- Technical drawing, GD&T, and manufacturing experience
- Experience with 3D-CAD tools (Unigraphics NX) and finite element analysis CAE tools (Ansys)
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
- Proven ability to lead global projects and team members across cultural boundaries
- Experience with technical root cause analysis of field failures and identifying design related corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Ability to work under pressure and challenging conditions
- Strong desire and ability to drive improvement and change
- Fluent English written and spoken
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years experience working with components and suppliers in utility scale Wind Turbine Driveline subsystem (main bearing, main shaft, main bearing covers & seals)
- Proven track record of collaborating with global commodity leaders to optimize component costs and influence purchasing strategy
- Established design process knowledge and cross functional team leadership
