The Denver office of GEI Consultants is seeking a full-time Senior HDD Professional to assist with HDD specific complex and challenging projects at locations throughout the United States and Canada and to become an integral part of our team of highly skilled professionals. This position will be part of GEI’s Underground Construction practice that provides engineering services for a wide range of projects that require specialized construction techniques such as: tunnels, trenchless installs and rehabilitation, support of excavation (temporary works) and horizontal directional drilling design.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

  • Guiding GEI’s team of passionate HDD experts to-be by promoting and building a working environment that focuses on mentorship, training, technical excellence, collaboration, and inclusivity.
  • Providing technical design services, consulting, and review of internally and externally created HDD engineering work products.
  • Providing design and consulting services for contractors, engineers, and project owners.
  • Support business development of Lithos’ HDD market segment and cross-sell with GEI’s Underground Construction Design services.
  • Expanding our existing capabilities across North America.
  • Assist in recruiting and training additional staff.
  • Act as project manager and design lead, responsible for developing plans, sections, details and calculations for HDD and possibly other underground projects.
  • Assist with feasibility studies and other technical analysis to evaluate various construction methods,
  • Manage the technical aspects for underground construction engineering tasks primarily associated with HDD. Should there be interest and experience/background, the candidate may engage in the design and remediation of dams and levees; geotechnical instrumentation; geotechnical investigations and design for major water infrastructure, bridge, and waterfront projects.
  • Prepare technical scopes of work and budgets for proposal requests for contractors, engineers, and project owners.
  • Participate in proposal teams and presentations.
  • Lead and participate on multi-disciplinary, multi-geographic project teams.
  • Maintain high visibility in the marketplace through participation in client-based professional organizations and attendance and presentations at industry events.
  • Perform related administrative tasks specifically related to managed HDD projects including documentation of project activities, office administration, expense reports, purchase orders, invoicing support, etc;
  • This position has a field component to perform project inspections, develop business and meet with existing and potential clients, and attend conferences and general marketplace visibility; overnight travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong leadership, people management, and mentoring skills.
  • Strong desire for working in a collaborative environment.
  • Minimum of B.S. degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience. M.S. preferred.
  • PE certification, PE in California is a plus.
  • Ability to develop work, existing client relationships and/or the ability to work directly on existing contracts at time of hire a plus.
  • 10-15 years of previous professional experience in HDD engineering; significant Project Management experience, including proposal preparation and budgeting; thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Extensive geotechnical background including a strong fundamental knowledge of principles of geotechnical or geostructural engineering, soil and rock mechanics, earthquake engineering, and groundwater hydrology as they apply to both design and construction.
  • Recognized for technical excellence and development of client-focused, creative, and practical solutions.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on assignments as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field tasks and oversight.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
