SUMMARY:
This position will be responsible for driving improvement initiatives in safety & hygiene functions across the corporation. Ensuring GNS’s compliance and conformance to regulatory, statutory, and certifying standards as they pertain to safety and hygiene. Identifies, communicates, trains, tracks and reports on Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). Establishes a culture of safety and hygiene accountability.
Evaluates the workplace environment and develops safety, ergonomic, and hygiene management policies that identify and define the responsibilities of all employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In each of the duties listed below the employee is expected to perform to the highest standards of quality, to strive for maximum customer satisfaction, and to continually look for ways to improve the methods, practices and procedures of this position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in an effective manner with customers, clients, suppliers, and employees.
- Supports strategic and regulatory safety and hygiene functions for a multi-location manufacturing operation.
- Provide required or requested safety and hygiene services to business units and departments, including:
- Hearing conservation activities
- Ergonomic analysis and training
- Safety training
- Safety related problem-solving facilitation (8D Champion)
- Conducts investigations and root cause analyses of incidents, injuries and near-misses
- Machine safeguarding analysis
- Employee safety coaching
- Coordinate and lead regular Safety Committee meetings with a cross-functional team including a physical walk-through of the site
- Obtains written documentation of all incidents, injuries and near-misses
- Records and Reports incidents, injuries, and near-misses as appropriate including but not limited to: OSHA300 log, HR Manager, Production Manager(s), etc.
- Notifies MIOSHA of any accidents or injuries that require hospitalization
- Assess workplace for light duty assignments
- Issuing Safety Alerts
- Developing Shop Floor Safety Talks
- Support maintenance of required regulatory documentation including:
- MSDS sheets
- Audits/inspections
- Lockout instructions
- Emergency plans
- Plans, develops, and conducts trainings such as but not limited to:
- New Hire Orientation (Safety)
- Lock-Out/Tag-Out
- Workplace Violence
- Crane, Aerial Work Platform, Scissor Lift
- General Safety
- First Responder - First Aid, CPR, AED
- Drills: Fire / Evacuation, Tornado / Severe Weather, Spill
- Compile, analyze, interpret and report accident, loss and exposure statistical data.
- Prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize potential hazards.
- Execute assigned strategic planning action items for safety.
- Participate in developmental opportunities necessary to stay current in changes to applicable laws and other safety trends.
- Identify and train a back-up(s) to manage key tasks when absent.
- Additional functions not specifically outlined in this position description as directed by the leader.

- Bachelors of Science/Bachelors of Arts in Safety, Environmental Management or Related Field.
- 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably in the automotive industry) is required.
- Ability to train others in an effective manner.
- Must have strong organizational and administrative skills and a working knowledge of MS Office.
- Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to continuously improve all health and safety aspects of a manufacturing site.
- Have the ability to interact professionally with all levels of employees and leaders is essential.
- Have a working knowledge of OSHA laws / regulations.
- Must be detail oriented and excellent prioritization and multi-tasking skills to meet deadlines.
- Employee relations experience with a passion to develop and coach others.
- Experience with demonstrating discretion and sensitivity to working with confidential information.
- Must demonstrate the ability to resolve employee conflicts.
- Must demonstrate previous experiences with developing new processes and systems.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary to support multiple shifts.
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or similar certification preferred.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as statistical reports, procedural manuals, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Ability to professionally write reports, business correspondence, policies/rules, and procedural instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, government agents, and the general public.
- Ability to use a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications most notably Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Ability to use main business information system (PLEX experience is preferred), Human Resource Information Systems (PLEX and Kronos preferred), and Internet based services.
- Ability to solve practical problems by defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusion.
- Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exist.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
