The University of Kansas/Gensler Co-Op program will provide students with a very genuine professional experience in research, exploration, creative thinking, interdisciplinary and long distance collaboration, and expressive design communication. Organized into 2 distinct parts, THE INTERNSHIP and the THE STUDIO, the program will begin with an extremely immersive fall semester with the Gensler Chicago and Detroit offices. The program’s second semester will be a Gensler Studio in Lawrence, KS to explore manifestation of the previous semester’s research. Your Role The paid internship program provides an incredible experience working alongside industry professionals, consultants, contractors, and clients. This semester will provide an orientation to the professional workplace, the spirit of design teams, the design and delivery process, and an integration and exploration into the urban existence of distinctly different cities. What You Will Do Work/Research. Your time will be split between client centric design work with project teams and independent exploratory research projects. Teamed up with a Gensler research advisor, your independent research project will be focused on a mutually beneficial specific topic, and potentially fueling the future work during the studio portion of the program. Scheduled classes, desk critiques, and office presentations will be integral to the curriculum. To foster collaboration and discourse between offices, all students will utilize video conferencing and web presentations to communicate with the other office interns and leaders. The program conclusion could result in presentations at each of the host offices and then perhaps a joint critique back at KU at the end of the semester. Your Qualifications 5th Year University of Kansas Graduate Students. Highly creative, entrepreneurial, digitally advanced, exceptional communicators, community service focused. Proficient in AutoCAD (Revit training /experience a plus), graphic and 3-D computer rendering skills utilizing such software as Photoshop, InDesign, SketchUp, 3D Max, Photoshop, Rhino, etc. Hand sketching ability is also highly desired.
