$69,107 (Step 01) to $95,727 (Step 10)
GS-12: $82,830 (Step 01) to $114,741 (Step 10)
Salary is dependent upon location.

Qualifications:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. GS-11: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:
1. Three years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

2. One year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine hydrologic work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, Hydrologists have a sound working knowledge of the principles of hydrology and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work.**OR3. A combination of successfully completed graduate level education, as described, above that is beyond the second year of progressive graduate study and professional experience, as described above. GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning and executing complex hydrologic studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work typically involved conventional methods & techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Hydrologists have a very good knowledge of the principles of hydrology and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.

Responsibilities:

As a Hydrologist within the Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Collect, acquire and/or compile and organize scientific data from a variety of sources
  • Integration and interpretation of hydrologic, hydrogeologic, water-use, and water-quality data
  • Analysis of hydrologic data using statistical or numerical methods
  • Application of theories and methods of surface and groundwater hydrology, water use and availability, and water quality
  • Prepare complete scientific or technical reports summarizing results and findings of hydrologic investigations
  • Deliver oral presentations of technical analyses and results, to audiences of various technical experience
  • Communicate technical information effectively with technical team and cooperators in meeting-type settings or other forms of communication
  • Communicate implications of scientific and technical investigations to stakeholders
  • Complete technical assignments accurately and in timely manner
  • Demonstration of good organizational skills
  • Effective communication with technical/project team members, peer scientists, management
  • Identify water-resource issues of critical importance by interaction with the technical and resource-management community
  • Participate with other scientists and management in the development of scientific project proposals to address water-resource issues

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. However, work may also be performed in the field which involves periods of walking, bending, climbing, or driving motor vehicles to worksites. The work may also involve some overnight travel for training, meetings, and site visits.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, work time may also be spent periodically visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction, or an industrial setting subject to noise, fumes, and moving machinery. Both settings may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor.
