What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heat Treat Operator I position at Gerdau?
Position Purpose:
The Heat Treat Operator is responsible for providing an efficient and good quality heat treated products with short lead times and low downtime to the GMSP operations. The position practices safe work habits and follows standard work methods to meet customer requirements.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner.
- Gathers and analyzes information.
- Develops alternative solutions.
- Assist with implementation of plant safety programs in order to become familiar with the procedures necessary for safety and loss control.
- Assist with physical inventory recording and reporting to learn that function.
- Communicates and works with other Heat Treat Operators, Logistics and Maintenance Personnel.
- Operates and SAP systems.
- Capable of operating overhead remote controlled cranes.
- Follows Heat Treat operating schedule as directed by supervision.
- Assist in the development and improvement of Heat Treat operating practices.
- Work to maximize Heat Treatment daily production.
- Run optimal heating recipes and follows heating practices to ensure quality requirements.
- Follow all sampling practices and other sampling requirements as directed by supervision.
- Stages material and sets up production for oncoming crews (stages bundles on the stretcher table, perform stretcher length changes, savage saw blade changes, etc.)
- Maintain housekeeping and safe work environment standards by following 5S.
- Assist with rework: banding, sorting, disposing of scrap, tagging, etc.
- Communicate with oncoming and off-going shift.
- Follow ISO policies and practices to strive for zero defects, customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
- Handling and movement of materials to, within, and out of the work area.
- Assist with the rework process following standards.
- Must be proficient with computers.
- Operate forklift and cranes.
Environment:
Federal and State environmental regulations.
Must adhere to Gerdau policies and procedures.
Perform duties of moving mechanical parts.
Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.
Loud noise level in work environment.

Education or Equivalent:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), 3 years of relevant work experience, forklift and crane certification.
Specialized Knowledge and/or Skill:
Very good problem solving and mechanical skills.
Very good verbal communication skills.
