Quality Control Metallurgist

This position is open for domestic candidates only.

Responsible for providing support in the coordination and evaluation of external and internal customer requirements in accordance with the capacities and capabilities of the production departments (i.e. Steel Making and Rolling), and ancillary service departments (i.e. process and product metallurgy, material handling marketing).

• Under the general direction of the Quality Assurance Manager is primarily responsible for the identification, evaluation, and implementation of product and process enhancement opportunities. These actions would involve the planning, supervision, evaluation, and reporting of product trials and investigations on site or outside facilities.
• The incumbent will visit customers when there is a technical problem with the product or quality issue, and determine the nature of the problem.
• Upon visit to the customer, the incumbent physically inspects the product to determine resolution pertaining to material disposition and implementation of corrective action procedures. Incumbent will work with customers and plant personnel to conduct investigation and study to resolve quality problems and meet customer requirements.
• Incumbent will coordinate customer visits and tours of the Gerdau Wilton facility.
• The incumbent must have good communication skills to meet the needs of various audiences and must possess analytical and problem-solving skills. This position requires the ability to use a range of technical instruments and equipment to analyze materials and have good safety awareness for himself/herself and for others.
• In accordance with ISO 9000 requirements, the incumbent will actively participate in developing and auditing of work standards pertaining to product quality, will be involved and kept up to date with ASTM specifications and activities.
• The major challenge for this position is to integrate people with no direct reporting relationships into a common objective. The incumbent must demonstrate strong leadership skills including the ability to communicate ideas, motivate team efforts to resolve quality issues, receive and give feedback, and readily adapt to new situations and challenges.
• The incumbent must perform the above-mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations. Employees must also report any situation that may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Timely and cost-conscious evaluation of customer requirements
• Providing information and/or undertaking physical inspection of products to make decisions on material disposition applied to the customer.
• Investigation and evaluation of customer complaints, with the responsibility to formulate and implement corrective action procedures.
• Review customer requests for quotes and create needed materials in company's electronic systems
• Coordinate and organize customer visits.
• Engage actively in ISO 9000 program.
• As required, travel to provide direct technical support to sales and marketing efforts, and customer liaison duties.
• Qualifications for this position include background knowledge of steel manufacturing process, a four-year engineering degree from an accredited college or university in materials science field or equivalent. Working experience is a plus.
