BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for providing effective professional safety and health leadership to improve the industrial health and safety of all employees at both locations. This position will provide direction, guidance and expertise regarding all safety and loss prevention programs. In addition, this position will ensure compliance with all federal, state, local and corporate safety guidelines.
NATURE & SCOPE:
In this role the Safety Manager will have responsibility for both Downstream locations, Jackson, Michigan and Huntington, Indiana and reports directly to the Director of Downstream Operations at Gerdau Special Steel.
This position is responsible for assessing current loss prevention and control efforts (in the area of safety and health) and making recommendations to management for improvement. The incumbent will provide direction and guidance regarding the implementation and maintenance of all health and safety related programs. The incumbent will assist management with the strategic development and implementation of a management accountability system aimed at preventing and controlling losses by identifying and developing role definitions for all levels of the organization; Incumbent will also maintain a communication systems to effectively communicate safety and health issues throughout the organization.
The incumbent evaluates risks and develops guidelines for roles, training, measurements, and rewards for the management system in the areas of employee safety (behaviors, conditions that lead to accidents); industrial hygiene (noise, lead exposure, hazard communication, etc.); property protection (fire suppression systems, inspection procedures, etc.); post Injury and General Claims Management (all lines); OSHA compliance (lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fall protection, OSHA record keeping, etc.); contractors; and job safety analysis.
The incumbent actively participates in accident prevention activities to include inspections, observations, and incident investigations. This position acts in an advisory capacity to management and liaison with OSHA inspections and correspondence.
The incumbent should possess a bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 5-7 years’ safety management experience (manufacturing environment preferred), or a masters degree in safety, engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 3-5 years’ safety management experience (manufacturing environment preferred). Also desirable is 3-5 years’ facilitation experience in problem solving, communication, quality improvement and other typical facilitation experience.
Excellent communication skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional applications are required. Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provide guidance and expertise regarding the Health and Safety programs.
- Assist management with the development and implementation of management accountability system for safety and health initiatives.
- Evaluate risks and develop guidelines for management accountability system.
- Participate in safety inspections, observations, and incident investigations.
- Develop, implement and conduct safety training programs for division employees.
- Provide continuous improvement and loss reduction programs related to health and safety..
- Implement all aspects of ISRS.
- Act as liaison with OSHA inspections and correspondence.
- Stay abreast of developments in industrial safety and hygiene fields.
- Responsible for the management of contract security personnel at both locations.
