Camp - Camp Assistant

SUPERVISOR: Outdoor Program Manager

Leadership Summary

The Camp Assistant will infuse and model the Girl Scout Law into their everyday work to fulfill the mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

Position Summary

To further the mission of Girl Scouts Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma & Texas through the development and management of program, human resource, and strategic operations for the resident camp program. This position works with the Outdoor Program Manager and administration team to assist in supervision, training, coordination and administration of camp staff, daily camp operations and activities following state regulations, ACA Standards, Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints.

Major Accountabilities

  • Design, deliver, and evaluate camp programs which meet the needs and interests of the camps target populations and ensure their delivery in a safe and quality manner.
  • Assist in camper administrative duties to ensure a positive experience with resident camp program
    • Coordinate camper check-in and check-out procedures.
    • Communicate with parents on behavior and physical issues which arise during camp session.
    • Work alongside Outdoor Program Manager on conflict resolution and problem solving with staff as needed.
    • Evaluate the success of camp and the development of the campers' abilities and skills in various activities
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all areas.
    • Oversee daily checks of living quarters for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Ensure living areas as kept free of hazards and debris.
  • Supervise Camp Counselors with direct supervision of the Outdoor Program Manager to develop and implement all facets of camp program activities.
    • Regularly monitor work of Counselors.
    • Provide feedback and guidance to counselors.
    • Provide recommendations and concerns to Outdoor Program Manager regarding Counselors performance.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Set a good example to campers and other in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Prepares all ACA documentation prior to each session
  • Complete documentation designated by Camp Director
  • Attends orientation week
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Participates in camp activities as needed
  • Follows camp rules and policies
  • Maintains a positive attitude and professionalism with campers, parents, volunteers, and staff

Required

KNOWLEDGE AND CREDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • In keeping with our commitment to the Girl Scouts Law and Promise, our council places particular emphasis on teamwork, investment in the success of the organization, and commitment to each other. To align with those values, we expect that all team members will actively engage in 'all call' endeavors as announced by the organization periodically. There are times throughout our year when the work of other departments becomes heavy and/or critically timely. In the spirit of teamwork, it is our requirement that requests for assistance be met with collaborative enthusiasm by all team members. Examples may include but are not limited to-membership recruitment/renewal campaigns and efforts, product program logistics and support to include cookie cupboards and volunteer assistance, volunteer appreciation and engagement, retail inventory and delivery (among regional offices), program signature event participation, and support, and property maintenance/improvement as requested.
  • Must be 19 years of age
  • Experience in multiple camp roles
  • Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for similar population.
  • Experience in supervising others especially peers is desirable.
  • Additional experience with programming and administering camp programs is desirable.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Girl Scout Leadership Experience
  • Clearance of background check and drug screen.
  • Access to reliable transportation.

  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions
  • Provide ongoing program ideas to counseling and activity area staff
  • Organized and detailed orientated with a proven ability to multi-task and meet strict deadlines
  • Self-Starter, capable of adapting to any work environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team player
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs to include Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as data management and internet usage
  • Knowledge of office and kitchen equipment and operations and maintenance
  • Ability to drive different types of vehicles
  • All other duties assigned or necessary to support the organization as a whole

Selective Abilities & Physical Demands

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, asses its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and walk long distances on rocky, uneven ground.

  • Ability to live at camp during the entirety of the summer season.
