What are the responsibilities and job description for the Steward position at GLIDE MEMORIAL?

The Steward maintains the order and inventory of food supplies, dry goods, paper products, and equipment for the Daily Free Meals Program (DFMP). This person is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the stockroom, all refrigerators and freezers, as well as utilizing the proper methods for food storage. The Steward is also responsible for inventory rotation and data entry. If the Steward also drives for the DFMP, this person must pass a pre-employment drug test and must comply with the California Department of Motor Vehicles laws and rules of the road, as well as GLIDE’s Fleet Safety Program.

Work responsibilities will, at times, require long days and/or evening or weekend responsibilities. Excellent attendance is required with schedule flexibility determined by agency needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties can be assigned, and the duties and responsibilities of the job are subject to change without notice.

  • Receive and store all purchased and donated food. Rotate stock to maintain freshness.
  • Check all invoices as goods are removed from delivery trucks to confirm all items have been delivered in their proper quantities.
  • Maintain a regular and accurate computer inventory of in-stock items.
  • Supply main dining room and coffeehouse with all necessary food and supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Fulfill staff requests for food, beverages and supplies.
  • Take all garbage from main dining room, coffee house and prep kitchen to trash compactor.
  • Keep the trash area and both stockrooms clean, organized, sanitary and locked at all times.
  • Ensure the security of stockroom inventory by securing all entrances and exits and preventing unauthorized entrance to stockroom. Strictly enforce GLIDE policies as they relate to removal of all GLIDE property, including donations.
  • Oversee rodent and pest control in stockroom areas in accordance with Health and Safety standards.
  • Assist with the unloading of donations.
  • Deliver meals to shelters. Pick-up food donations from businesses and return to GLIDE. Maintain cleanliness and conduct daily inspections of vehicles. Report all vehicle concerns/problems immediately.

 EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Previous experience working as a warehouse/stockroom worker, driver desired.
  • Teamwork skills essential.

 CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

  • Must pass Tuberculosis screening.
  • CA Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Must complete annual food safety training and certification.

 COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  • Strong communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to communicate by telephone or two-way radio. Ability to understand and follow instructions concerning various chemicals.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Basic math skills.

 COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Proficient in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). 

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Vision corrected in normal range.
  • Hearing corrected in normal range. Ability to communicate effectively in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking.
  • The job of the Steward is physically demanding. Must be in good physical condition, as this person will perform manual labor and repetitive physical activities (for up to 8 hours per day).
  • Trunk strength. The ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles repeatedly or continuously over time without ‘giving out’ or fatiguing. Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as bending, twisting, lifting, balancing, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, 90% of time standing and 10% sitting. Must possess the strength, stamina and mobility to stand and walk constantly (6-8 hours) come and go from the work area repeatedly and climb multiple flights of stairs repeatedly in a given shift. Ability to navigate stairs with heavy loads in hands or with equipment throughout the work day.
  • Use hands and arms to handle, install, position and move materials, and manipulate things on a constant basis for up to 8 hours.
  • Frequent lifting of food containers, foodstuff, and pots weighing up to 50 pounds is required. Must possess the ability to independently and safely lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for extended periods (up to 1 hour) and heavier weights with the use of equipment or assistance from others.

  • Fast paced, with frequent interruptions, demanding cafeteria setting with kitchen, serving line and storage areas that serves clients who may become aggressive. Work environment includes working outdoors in all weather conditions and exposure to potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Environment includes exposure to damp floors, steam from equipment, and potentially caustic cleaning materials.
  • Noise level can be loud and distracting. Lighting is conducive to completion of work.
  • Employees may be exposed to air and blood borne pathogens.
  • Fast paced, with frequent interruptions, demanding, public social services environment.
  • GLIDE’s buildings are located in the Tenderloin. Due to our surroundings, it is important to always be aware of what’s going on around you while walking around the neighborhood.
