Overview

GBSI is seeking an Information Technology (IT) professional for the role of Software Systems Safety Engineer in Huntsville, AL.  The Software Systems Safety Engineer performs software system safety analyses and reviews, evaluates TDPs, and participates in the development of analysis artifacts providing evidence of proper applied safety standards, presenting results to the Joint and/or Army SSSTRP, fuze boards, and Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Boards (WSERBS). Utilizes S3I Directorate internal processes, AMCOM Regulation 385-17, MIL-STD882, Army Regulation 385-10, JSSSEH for software system safety analyses and TDPs review and evaluations.



Responsibilities
  • Performs Software Safety evaluations, assessments and analysis of all systems, subsystems, and components software and computing systems, to include evaluation of the OEM/developer’s systems engineering and software processes, documentation, artifacts, and other deliverable and non-deliverable products, such as, but not limited to specifications, requirements, design artifacts, models, source and executable code, test procedures, test reports, test scripts, code structural coverage analysis reports. Evaluations and analyses shall address systems in all stages of their lifecycle.
  • Performs analyses on systems, subsystems, and components software for compliance with MIL_STD-882, Army Regulation (AR) 38510, Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH), Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) 385-17 and S3I Directorate internal processes;
  • Analyzes and evaluates software requirements, hazard analysis, Change Impact Analysis, design code, test plans, test procedures, test scripts, test reports and other technical data used as objective evidence to support software safety qualifications;
  • Provides results of the systems software safety evaluations, analyses and assessments;
  • Analyzes and evaluates System/Software Safety Program Plans (SSPPs/SwSPPs), Software Safety Critical Function Analysis (SSCFA) and reports, Preliminary Hazard Lists (PHLs), Preliminary Hazard Assessments (PHAs), System Safety Hazard Analysis (SSHAs), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs), Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSAs), Fault Tree Analysis (FTAs), System Safety Assessments (SSAs), Software Failure Modes and Effects and Criticality Analyses (ScFMECAs)/(SwFMEAs), and Safety Assessment Records (SARs);
  • Provides senior level system software safety technical engineering evaluations, analyses, and studies to recommend potential technical solutions for design maturity, risk mitigation options, validation test data and fielding readiness and reports;
  • Reviews, documents, and delivers all assessments, findings, and recommendations in an Independent Software Safety Assessment Report (ISSAR). Reviews and evaluates the OEM/developer’s software development program, software safety program, and its developed hazard analysis program and hazard tracking system;
  • Reviews, evaluates, and provides reports on the OEM/developer’s implementation of safety in the OEM/developer software development program, software system safety program, in the OEM/developer’s system and software safety related documentation including the hazard analyses and safety artifacts;
  • Participates in the development of documentation, artifacts, and presentations to the Joint and/or Army SSSTRP, Fuze Boards and WSERBS. Participates in all activities for the Joint and/or Army SSSTRP review, Fuze Boards, and WSERBs. Reviews and evaluates the implementation of SSSTRP, Fuze Board, WSESRB findings and recommendations and provides reports;
  • Evaluates changes to system/software for safety impact IAW S3I Directorate processes and documents system hazards and provides findings IAW DIMISC-80508;
  • Performs Level-Of-Rigor (LOR) tasks and objectives, defining the software safety life-cycle processes and software safety hazard analyses, and documents results;
  • Participates in all software safety reviews, analyses, assessments, software safety boards, and software safety working groups to ensure software safety processes are followed and certifications are achieved for all system, subsystems, and components;
  • Attends and participates in Government Program Office, OEM/Developer, Supplier, Aviation Engineering Directorate (AED), AMCOM Safety Office and S3I meetings, reviews, and working groups. Prepares and provides presentations, resources, after action results, and meeting summaries in a technical report for each review, meeting, inspection, and audit;
  • Identifies hazards, safety significant requirements, and derived safety requirements and documents;
  • Identifies hazard tracking logs, functional hazard analysis, software safety plans, system software safety artifacts and analyses.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or scientific field is required. Master's degree in a technical or scientific field is preferred;
  • Minimum five (5) years' related experience is required;
  • DoD-issued Secret Security Clearance is required at start;
  • Experience with software development processes for Flight-Critical and Safety-Critical software is required;
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882 and/or similar safety standards is required;
  • Familiarity with civil and military airworthiness qualification and Software Safety requirements, such as: DO-178, JSSSEH, DO-278, DO-254, SAE ARP 4754, and SAE ARP 4761 is preferred;
  • Familiarity with software development/lifecycle IEEE 12207, MIL-STD-498 is preferred;
  • Experience with Model Based Software Development, familiarity with Matlab and Simulink, Rhapsody, DOORS, SCADE, etc., is preferred;
  • Familiarity with software development and evaluation tools is a plus.
