Design Engineer
We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our growing team at our Research & Design engineering firm with the primary focus on serving the firearms and defense industries. Our main goal is to help our customers with product development, evaluation, prototyping, and low-volume manufacturing, while providing first calls customer service.
The Design Engineer works together with all team members and customers to deliver new products and improve legacy designs. The Design Engineer role requires self-motivation, self-reliance, a problem-solving focus, design for manufacturing knowledge, end-user experience, and ownership from start to finish on all projects assigned.
Job Type: Full-time, On-site
Responsibilities for the Design Engineer:
- Develop new products or improvements to legacy designs, targeting end user experience, cost targets, and appropriate DFMA for production (quality & cost focused), fixtures, gauging materials, and finishing requirements.
- Using SolidWorks to generate and check drawings, utilizing appropriate GD&T with ANSI/ASME Y14.5M, and a functional dimensions scheme while performing tolerance stack analysis for optimization and ensuring form, fit, and function of assemblies.
- Independently generate thorough test plans for product performance testing to include function, feel, appeal, FMEA, stress & fatigue analysis, and destruction.
- Compiling and analyzing testing results to formulate plausible hypotheses and rational conclusions with recommendations for action and execution of refining components/products.
- Use metrology equipment for evaluation and determination of design intent.
- Work with vendors and suppliers to meet the project’s needs.
- Ability to help resolve design/technology/CAD process issues innovatively, always in a proactive, collaborative, but compliant manner.
- Develop and manage the products bill of materials.
- Manage Intellectual Property risk through patent searches, applications, and trade studies.
- Constantly follow and enforce safe firearm handling, range safety, and all Safety policies.
- Must be able to travel infrequently.
Requirements For Design Engineer:
- B.S. in Manufacturing Design Engineering or equivalent degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Solidworks experience
- GD&T Drafting
- Ability to rapidly re-prioritize
- Ability to work with a fast-moving team to meet objectives
- Travel up to 10%
