Who will you be working with?
You will interact with people at all levels of the organization. The dedicated team at our facility in Salem, VA will partner with you to provide value for our customers by producing quality products, delivered on time. Some of the key stakeholders outside of your direct reports that you will be regularly engaging with will be the direct manager, Operations Manager as well a General Manager, Safety Manager, HR Manager, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Customer Service and Sales teams.
How will you make a difference?
As a member of Wabtec Graham White, you will be responsible to lead the foundry team at our facility in Salem, VA. This role is crucial to the success of the overall production process, which includes producing metal castings in our foundry, precision parts in the machine shop, and ultimately the assembly of equipment for freight and passenger rail vehicles. With support from the team, you will lead a foundry which is poised to take the next step in our development plan for the future.
The Foundry Manager, while directly reporting to Operations Manager will indirectly support with reporting to other business leaders on key metrics and updates as well as collaborative activities. A few examples would be:
- Safety incidents, investigations, concerns reporting, near misses, RCA’s and CA’s
- Quality reporting, COPQ/PPM activities, scrap/yield tracking, recovery action plans and updates
- Personnel record keeping/reporting, performance & disciplinary actions etc.
- Production activities and measures such as schedule attainment, productivity, closed order variances
- Inventory management & tracking
- Continuous improvement projects tracking and reporting
- Costing/Quoting Support
- R&D, Prototyping and experiments support
- Provide technical support to sales and customer service on all routine and special projects. This includes design evaluations, cost analysis, completion time/status updates and quality reviews.

- Do you have any training or experience with six sigma, Lean or other advanced tools to drive change, with demonstrated successes?
- Do you have at least 5 years experience with metalworking processes?
- Do you have a Bachelor’s degree along with 5 years or more of progressive manufacturing leadership experience?
- What is your proficiency with an ERP system? Oracle Experience?
- What data analysis tools and software are you most experienced with? Excel Proficiency?
What will your typical day look like?
- Looking for ways to improve safety within the shop
- Working with the team to improve processes and to reduce waste
- Directing foundry employees to manufacture products according to defined standards
- Managing the production schedule for several product lines within the foundry
- Live the values of Wabtec and hold team members accountable to those values
- Organize, assign and monitor performance of work in the plant using approved procedures.
- Perform personnel functions such as selection, training, coaching, and evaluation of hourly personnel currently due.
- Drive continuous improvement and cost reduction activities on a daily basis with formal lean tools and methods.
- Review production reports, activity reports, or other performance data to measure productivity or to identify areas needing quality, cycle time, cost reduction or process improvement.
- Optimize plant performance through appropriate scheduling of manpower, equipment, and resources.
- Recommend facility/equipment repairs, capital improvement projects and follow up on status as needed
- Prepare daily, weekly and monthly reports detailing significant production activities and updates on operating plan and objectives.
- Payroll activities for hourly employees using timekeeping software
What about the physical demands of the job?
- Frequent standing, walking, and sitting is required
- Must be able to conform to all safety standards, including wearing required PPE
- Must be able to communicate effectively, including speech, hearing, and all forms of written communication
- Must be willing to work flexible and extended hours as needed to support variations with the production requirements for the plant
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
