JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for administering basic life support care to sick and injured persons in pre- hospital settings working as a member of the emergency medical team.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responds to instructions from emergency medical dispatcher and monitors communication contact.
- Checks ambulance for readiness; inspects vehicles mechanical condition, emergency medical equipment, medications, and supplies.
- Assists in assessing nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
- Administers basic airway management (combitube), nebulized medication therapy, oxygen therapy, medical and trauma emergency care, and basic EKG monitoring/interpretation according to protocol.
- Monitors NS IV drips that have been previously initiated.
- Administers Dextrose, nitroglycerin, Saline Locks and aspirin if indicated in the field.
- Manages Biohazardous materials.
- Assists in controlling crowds, securing scene safety, extricating victims, protecting valuables, and other duties at scene of catastrophe.
- Assists treatment center admitting personnel to obtain and record information related to patient's vital statistics and circumstances of emergency.
- Completes all paperwork according to standard operating procedures.
- Observes, records, and reports to Physician patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
- Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange for reception of victims at treatment facility.
- Attends training and department meetings when required; participates in a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education (or equivalent) each year.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid, State of Colorado driver’s license. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment EMT Basic
Certification, BLS Certification required prior to hire and as a condition of continued employment. IV endorsement ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 preferred, all are required within 6 months of hire. The employee is required to travel extensively with some trips to locations outside of the County that may require overnight stays.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Skill in EMS, reading a map, general ambulance maintenance, trouble-shooting ambulance and equipment problems.
- Skill in basic computer usage.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, medical professionals, and the general public.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, the public, supervisors and other County officials.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, this position also requires the ability to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear; reach, climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; taste or smell; use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the office work environment is usually low to moderate. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions and to long periods of driving or sitting in a vehicle; occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; and subject to exposure to gases, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals and human body fluids.
