What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mental Health Technician position at Grand View Health?
The Mental Health Technician monitors the therapeutic environment by performing routine safety checks and continually monitors patient status. The Mental Health Technician follows treatment and behavioral health plans as developed by care team. The Mental Health Technician demonstrates competence in de-escalation techniques, both verbal and non-verbal.
Essential Functions
Bachelor's Degree in an area of human services such as sociology, political science, counseling, family therapy, education or criminal justice required Or
High School Diploma/GED And Over 1 year to 3 years direct care experience in the human services field involving direct contact with the individuals receiving services required Or
High School Diploma/GED and completion of 12 credits in an area of human services or nursing required
Over 1 year to 3 years experience in Behavioral Health preferred
Skills and Abilities
Nursing Assistant – Certified, Upon hire, preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS), Within 2 weeks of hire, required
Essential Functions
- Monitors the therapeutic environment by performing routine safety checks and continually monitors patient status. Follows treatment and behavioral health plans as developed by care team. Demonstrates competence in de-escalation techniques, both verbal and non-verbal.
- Communicates any changes in patients’ condition in a timely manner to assigned nurse or their designee.
- Utilizes proper chain of command for issues related to working environment.
- Follows treatment and behavioral health plans as developed by care team.
- Documents observation and care of patient in electronic medical record.
- Supports the patient to perform self-care or activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, toileting and eating. Also assists with ambulation as indicated.
- Demonstrates competence in caring for agitated and violent patients including use of restraints as indicated/ordered.
- Demonstrates competence in de-escalation techniques, both verbal and non-verbal.
