Perform service and minor repairs on assigned equipment to assure its safe and dependable running condition.
The Public Works Department road maintenance and construction work is carried out in three geographic districts. Each district is supported by a mechanical repair shop. In addition, the Department has a Central Shop, which is equipped to perform the most advanced repair work needed for road maintenance operations. Incumbents of this class may be assigned to the Central Shop or to one of the district shops according to workloads and types of repair projects in each of the respective shops. These incumbents' function at a beginning level of mechanical skill, performing principally routine maintenance service on passenger vehicles, trucks and equipment, but also assisting in repairs such as replacement of parts and uncomplicated welding under supervision. During emergencies or manpower shortages, incumbents may operate assigned maintenance equipment and, therefore, need to be licensed and trained to operate such vehicles.
