JOB DESCRIPTION: Doctors’ Assistant (Scribe)
REPORTS TO: Clinical/Retina Supervisor
SUMMARY: The goal of an ophthalmic scribe is to increase the clinical efficiency and productivity of the physician in a clinical setting. The scribe should be able to anticipate needs of the physician, effectively multi-task, communicate to patients and staff members, and monitor clinic flow. A scribe must follow patient confidentiality guidelines, and is responsible for transcribing accurate and detailed data into the patient’s medical record.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accurately and thoroughly document ophthalmic exams and procedures as they are being performed by the physician
- Documenting appropriate diagnoses and symptoms as well as follow-up instructions and prescriptions as directed by the physician
- Assists the physician in the examination room. This includes, but is not limited to: chart presentation and documentation, instilling drops and ointments, sending prescription medications, minor surgical and laser procedures (both sterile and non-sterile), drawing injectables, and removing sutures
- Provide patients and/or family members with instructions for self-care and follow-up as directed by the physician
- Monitoring clinical flow throughout the office
PRE-REQUISITES:
- Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S
- High school graduate or GED equivalent required
- Previous experience as an ophthalmic scribe or technician is preferred
- Previous experience with electronic medical records preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be in good physical health to move, transport, and assist patients throughout the office and in or out of chairs, as needed. There can be long periods in stationary positions (both sitting or standing) throughout the work day. The person in this position needs to frequently move the office as needed to effectively manage clinical flow.
