Position Overview

Under the direction of the Vice President, InstitutionalAdvancement, the Director of Government & Foundation Relationsmanages grants program and related stewardship program and writesproposals and solicitation letters to maximize support fromgovernment and private foundation granting agencies. Works with theDevelopment Committee to move initiatives forward in these areas.Implements cultivation and stewardship strategies for donors andcoordinates activities with appropriate GLAZA and Zoo staff.Manages and initiates these funding programs which encompassessolicitations, identification of prospects, cultivation andstewardship.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Manages the Los Angeles Zoo's program for raising funds fromfoundations, corporations and government agencies.
  1. Researches and writes applications and proposals and supervisesa Grant Writer.
  1. Identifies and cultivates these prospects with assistance ofGLAZA leadership and volunteers.
  1. Researches guidelines and annual reports and maintains andupdates prospect lists.
  1. Advises and consults with staff on grant opportunities,feasibility, deadlines and preparation of applications according toguidelines.
  1. Stays abreast of Zoo programs and activities.
  1. Maintains application/proposal calendar and maintains andimplements appropriate notification procedures. Coordinates thedevelopment of proposals and required information with appropriatedivision heads.
  1. Works with Finance division to produce application budgets andto provide accurate reporting on usage of grant funds.
  1. Manages reporting and monitors progress for matching funds thatmay be required by a granting agency.
  1. Monitors acknowledgement system for corporate, foundation andgovernment grants and gifts and preparation of acknowledgmentletters.
  1. Implements appropriate notification procedures for outcome ofgrant applications/proposals and all requirements and deadlinesassociated with awarded grants.
  1. Manages stewardship program for government grants andfoundation and corporate donors, and files reports oncontacts.
  1. Prepares regular reports of grant activities for VicePresident, Institutional Advancement.
  1. Oversees maintenance of files for foundation and governmentgrants.
  1. Supervises and coordinates the production of Developmentreports and other reports as requested.
  1. Attends Zoo Commission meetings and workshops with governmentfunders in order to prepare and submit grants on behalf of the LosAngeles Zoo. Coordinates with the Zoo’s project management staffregarding scheduling and funding for capital improvementprojects.
  1. Writes other non-grant materials, including articles andcollateral materials as needed.
  1. Attends GLAZA events to personally steward government andfoundation donors.
  1. Performs other duties, as required.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  1. A Bachelor's Degree and at least five years of relevantexperience.
  1. Proven success at government and foundation prospectidentification, relationship building, solicitation andstewardship.
  1. Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles and practicesof Development, fundraising, donor relations and applicable laws,rule, regulations, policies, etc.
  1. Demonstrated record of writing successful proposals for a rangeof support from foundations.
  1. Superior written and oral communication skills to articulate acompelling case for philanthropic support for the fundraising goalsof the Los Angeles Zoo. Ability to communicate effectively withindividuals, groups, and corporate and foundation leaders.
  1. Demonstrated supervisory ability to motivate and organizevolunteers to accomplish established Development objectives.
  1. Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain close andeffective working relationships with curators, keepers, part-timeand full-time staff, members, volunteers, donor prospects, seniorZoo staff and the general public.
  1. Demonstrated skills in researching prospective majorgovernment, corporate, foundation and individual donors.
  1. Demonstrated ability to initiate programmatic activitiesindependently; organize, prioritize and complete work in a timelymanner despite many deadlines and competing requirements.
  1. Demonstrated skills in establishing and maintaining effectiverelationships with contributions and community relations managersof major corporations and foundations and program officers ofgovernment granting agencies, exercising tact, diplomacy,professionalism, flexibility and discretion.
  1. Skill in solicitation techniques.
  1. Skills in listening perceptively, conveying sensitivity andawareness to prospective donors.
  1. Working knowledge of government, corporate and foundationphilanthropy. General knowledge of corporate and foundation givingto zoos desirable.
  1. Demonstrated skills in administrative duties, including budgetpreparation and project management.
  1. Demonstrated working knowledge of principles and practices offinancing public funded agencies.
  1. Demonstrated skills at word processing and spreadsheetprograms; working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  1. Demonstrated ability to forecast fundraising targets and toevaluate and report progress.
  1. Demonstrated ability to focus on a computer screen for extendedperiods during the day.
  1. Demonstrated ability to remain in a stationary position forextended periods during the day.
  1. Demonstrated ability to visually see or hear calls beingreceived.
  1. Willingness and ability to work holidays and weekends asrequired. Required to work at GLAZA Development events as needed.Required to work all GLAZA galas.
  1. Working knowledge of and familiarity with the goals of the LosAngeles Zoo, with the activities and research interests of thecurators, as well as a practical understanding of zoos.
  1. Demonstrated skills at planning cultivation events such asdinners and receptions preferred.
