ARCHITECT

The Architect position at SGA|NW, a GF design company, reports to a Project Manager.

DESCRIPTION

Facilitate and coordinate assigned projects from project analysis to completion while managing the design team.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position requires working closely with a team of in-house architects, interior designers, planners, landscape architects and consultants on multiple projects with a variety of project diversity throughout the Southeast to meet scheduled deliverables. The successful candidate must be a leader, self-starter, organized, flexible and possess a strong work ethic.

The following duties are normal for the position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs various project coordination duties; may assist project manager in project analysis, programming, site analysis, scheduling and establishing project objectives; coordinates activities of all professional disciplines assigned to the project; assists in the identification of the clients expectations for quality, price and schedule.

  • Various design-related duties: participates in all phases of design, from conception to closeout; works closely with the designer in providing a professional point of contact with the client during the design process; provides project director with input in establishing and monitoring project budget and schedule; assists in creation of packages for conceptual, first review and second review; coordinates work of project designer and interior designer.

  • Ensures preparation of contract documents including all drawings, specifications, and reports.

  • Maintains continual client communication during construction document preparation and through construction; guides the owners representatives, his outside consultants and their resources as necessary.

  • Assists with construction document preparation; maintains the information flow to the project manager; assures that construction documents accurately reflect the contract scope and design intent; reviews construction documents periodically to ensure accuracy; coordinates all technical information from vendors and owners; coordinates building code reviews with appropriate agencies; conducts reviews with the client; represents the architect of record; coordinates with the project manager in determining construction and early bid document requirements.

  • Assists with construction coordination: participates in project team meetings as needed; attends construction meetings with the client; provides on-site observations during construction to ensure that design intent, quality, and clients expectations are met; monitors proposed changes and coordinates with the project manager, the consultants, and the client; assists construction administrator in punch-out and establishing substantial completion; assures completion and distribution of owners manual and record drawings.

  • Keeps up-to-date budgets and expenditures for each project as assigned; communicates issues, both good and bad, to the appropriate individuals.

  • Report directly to Project Manager matters that jeopardize success of project which cannot be resolved at intermediate levels of responsibility, as outlined above.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Architecture

  • Professional licensure

  • Experience in a professional design office

  • Comfortable in a support role and ability to work with minimum supervision

  • Ability to direct, mentor and coordinate work efforts of project team

  • Understanding of design, materials, construction practices and construction costs

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant codes, operations, processes and trends with building codes and zoning ordinances

  • Understanding of sustainable material selection for LEED compliance

  • Ability to manage multiple projects

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Strong organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrated ability to work through the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques for project activities to meet the project requirements, through leadership, communication, time management, risk management, planning, negotiation and subject matter expertise

  • Ability to cultivate a professional presence through competence, reliability, honesty, integrity, respect for others, positivity, and thoughtfully listening

  • Graphic presentation skills, including hand drawing and computer rendering

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Proficiency in graphic software

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD software

  • Proficiency in Revit

LEVELS

Level 1

  • 3-5 years experience.

  • Certification as licensed professional is required.

  • Professional degree in architecture, plus three to five years of related experience.

  • Fully competent architect in all conventional aspects of architecture. Independently performs a variety of assignments requiring skills in all conventional aspects of architectural designs for projects of moderate size and complexity.

  • Performs analyses of design, planning and occupancy studies, and limited design layouts.

  • Prepares project specifications, compiling and analyzing relevant data.

  • Writes reports and specifications.

  • Reviews completed reports, plans, estimates, and calculations.

Level 2

  • 6 or more years experience.

  • Certification as licensed professional is required.

  • Professional degree in architecture, plus at least six years of related experience.

  • Responsible for specific technical design aspects of an assigned major project, including investigation, evaluation, and recommendation of design solutions that best meets the clients needs.

  • Provides professional architectural consultation in the planning, design, and coordination of large complex projects. Independently applies advanced architectural concepts and designs.

  • Carries out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.

  • May provide technical guidance to less experienced architects.

Level 3

  • 8 or more years experience.

  • Certification as licensed professional is required.

  • Professional degree in architecture, plus at least eight years of related experience.

  • Participates in the conceptual design and provides full support through the entire project.

  • Serves as a SME on specialized systems.

  • Liaises with Project Management, other architects and consultants.

  • Develops and represents lead technical viewpoint on projects.

  • Coordinates with Director and Department Head on appropriate technical solutions and product strategies.

  • Project size differentiates this position from the senior level.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office setting, onsite at client locations and on construction/build sites.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
