What is a Groundwork Denver?
Groundwork Denver is a 501c(3) non-profit organization located in Denver, CO. The mission of Groundwork
Denver is to bring about the sustained improvement of the environment and promote health and well-being through community-based partnerships and action. We are “doers”, not “talkers”. We plant trees, we improve parks, we clean up rivers, we grow food, we insulate houses, and we coordinate thousands of volunteers to help.
What is the Green Corps?
The Groundwork Denver Green Corps is a summer employment program for young adults ages 18 to 29-years old.
Participants work on projects focused on improving the physical environment and health and well-being for our public lands and the urban environment. This year the Green Corps will focus primarily on Three projects: (1) partnering with the National Fish and Wildlife Service to improving and maintaining The Rocky Mountain Arsenal/ and (2) potential projects with Groundwork Denver Outreach services to promote our programs and provide local communities with free energy audits and rain barrels and trees which the Green corps may help perform these services. (3) 10-day service trip to Valentine National Wildlife Refuge in Valentine, NE. This will be the capstone trip for Green Corps members where they will help maintain the sandhills environment, take a canoe trip down The
Niobrara National Scenic River and spend time in a lodge meeting Fish and Wildlife Services staff while exploring the Refuge. Participants are expected to work approximately 30-40 hours per week between June to
September, and will be building hard and soft skills, learning about career opportunities in the Denver Mountain
Parks and Fish and Wildlife Service, and helping our natural environment thrive.
Who is eligible?
Participants must:
- Be ages 18-29 years old.
- Have reliable transportation to the GWD office and Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge.( Or any meeting site designated by crew lead) we expect to have a meeting location for the crew at the GWD office and then crew will travel together to project sites.
- Be interested in conservation, community and environmental stewardship.
- Have commitment to teamwork, safety, follow-through, education, and hard work.
- Be physically able to work outside for 8 hours often in adverse conditions, handle tools safely, and lift
25lbs of material regularly.
- Be willing to participate in mandatory overnight camping trips and outdoor recreation activities.
- Demonstrate professional attitude by being on time, taking responsibility for safety and verbalizing ideas and concerns to team supervisors and others at Groundwork.
- Be a leader among peers by setting an example to other corps members at all times.
- Wear apropriate work wear, come prepared for work with appropriate materials like sunscreen, lunch, sunglasses etc. (we can often help with gear if necessary )
- Serve as ambassadors for Groundwork Denver at events and while working with partners.
- Abide by all Groundwork Denver policies and procedures.
What is the work schedule?
Green corps will work 8am-4 p.m. each day working between 30-40 hours each week.
Hours may fluctuate depending on weather and projects.
Where we will be working?
- Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge
- Denver Mountain Parks Training- 6-week program; Team will receive six weeks of training learning
- Conduct Rain Barrell installations for residents in Denver Metropolitan Area. Hours and timeframe are still being determined but are expected to be scheduled for July.
- Valentine Wildlife Refuge. 10- day trip in September, 80 hours of work and a full day of recreation canoeing down the Niobrara National Scenic River.
- Corps members will be offered additional opportunities including job placement with partners and participate in other work opportunities as they arise during and after the summer season.
What will the work involve?
- Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, Helping staff with park maintenance, construction and other tasks. Invasive Species Management (e.g. plant ID and removal of harmful and invasive species including
Houndstongue, Mullen, and Thistle), Irrigation work (e.g. setting up irrigation to help native seeds get established in the prairie), and Trail work (e.g. build and maintain trails for hiking and walking).
- Water Conservation: Provide free rain barrel instalations for residents to improve efficiency of lawn watering, save residents money on their water bill and help reduce water use in the Denver Metropoitain
Area.
- Carrer skills development- Seeking certfication with local partners and GWD staff, Resume building, seeking and applying for Green Jobs with local parnters and various natural resource organizations.
- Valentine Wildlife Refuge: Invasive Species Mangement (e.g. tree ID and removal of harmful and invasive species including Cedar Trees and Black Locusts), pollinator habitat creation (e.g. building restoration plots with plants beneficial to pollinators like milkweed)
*Technology– The use of technology, including cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, and other battery powered devices are not allowed while working on projects, bicycle travel, or group meetings unless otherwise specified by the crew supervisor.
*Substance Free– In accordance to a drug-free workplace, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs are prohibited in and around the Groundwork workplace.
Wage
- $17.00 up to 350 hours
