SUMMARY

We are seeking a driven and dynamic Director of Safety.  The Director of Safety is responsible for developing and implementing an outstanding safety culture and program for the company. This includes developing and enforcing safety policies and procedures, conducting safety inspections, and training employees on safety procedures. The Director of Safety also works with other departments to ensure that safety is valued in all aspects of the company's operations.  This position may require traveling up to 30% of the time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and execute a comprehensive safety training and development strategy aligned with the company's objectives.

Collaborate with department heads and senior leadership to identify training needs and prioritize HJ Russell's Culture of Safety.

Design, implement, and manage safety programs that cater to various employee positions, from office to field based roles.

Oversee the creation of engaging safety training as required to instruct and supplement the staff knowledge.

Evaluate and select external training partners, vendors, or tools to supplement internal programs.

Monitor industry trends and best practices to ensure the company's safety program is innovative and up to date.

Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of the Safety Culture and provide regular feedback to upper management.

Mentor and lead a team of training professionals, providing guidance, coaching, and performance feedback.

Assess and address skill gaps across the organization and develop targeted solutions to address them.

Collaborate with HR and the Training Manager to integrate training programs into the onboarding process for new hires.

Manage the Safety budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently to achieve maximum impact.

Foster a culture of safety by incorporating Safety into each aspect of the Construction process.

Performs work in a safe manner and actively encourages others to do the same.

Internal Interfaces with:

Accounting - discuss costs monitoring.

Preconstruction - assist in estimating new work.

General Superintendent - works together as a team; establishes and maintains a project responsibility matrix, schedules, and budgets; coordinates changes; and monitors the quality of work.

Legal/Risk Mgmt – Ensure appropriate coverage and licenses are in place and reporting of incidents and claims.

Human Resources – Ensuring that all recruiting/on-boarding and close-outs initiatives are done timely.  Attends appropriate training and development.  Become fully familiar with the Company’s policies and procedures, and Performance Management System.

IT – Project setups and technology connectivity.

Senior Management - Supply regular updates as well as plans for future initiatives

External Interfaces with:

Clients - maintain relationships with client managers and pursue opportunities for repeat business.

Owner and Architect - develop and maintain a professional working relationship.

Local authorities - obtain necessary project licenses and permits.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the RUSSELL Safety Program. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with RUSSELL's policies and applicable laws: including planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising personnel performance with the Group Manager; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health, or a related field.

Proven experience leading and developing a safety culture and implementation of various safety procedures that drive measurable results.

A minimum of 10 years of experience in safety management.

Strong knowledge and understanding of construction safety regulations.

Direct experience with OSHA (Training, Inspections, and Reporting)

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.

Strategic mindset with the ability to align safety initiatives with organizational goals.

Outstanding leadership skills with the ability to motivate a diverse team.

Proficiency in assessing the Safety culture and developing effective motivators to drive culture shift.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

30% of Travel will be required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A., B.S. or B. Arch.) in Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field (Master's degree preferred). 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have some additional certification/license.  Preference given to Master Safety Professional, Certified Safety Director, Construction Health and Safety Technician, or Certified Safety and Health Manager. 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

Training and prior production experience with Safety Tracking programs, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and/or PowerPoint).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate or loud.
