Here’s how this position contributes to our local team:

Requirements:

  • Inspects and monitors field work activities on projects for conformance with plans, specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Checks lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard surveying and field measuring equipment.
  • Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Monitors highway work zones and traffic control setups for conformance with contract requirements
  • Tests and/or samples materials

 

Basic Skills:

  • In process of learning how to read plans and specifications for field application
  • How to use Excel/Word to fill out Inspector Daily Reports
  • Learning to communicate with field personnel
  • Learning to introduce himself/herself to stakeholders/neighborhoods/businesses
  • Learning to fill out a Field Note Record/Pay Note
  • Learning to track quantities
  • Learning to do Field Material Verifications
  • Beginning to learn the WSDOT Construction Manual and field application
  • Basic Math Skills
  • Problem Solving
  • How the Organization Chart Works
  • Understanding who is allowed to be/perform onsite
  • Working directly under a Sr. Inspector for Training
  • Beginning to learn how to track force accounts
  • How to read/use the Record of Materials
  • Learning to use photos to track the project
  • Understanding Rudimentary Construction Sequencing
  • Learning to use multiple bid item schedules
  • Beginning to learn Davis Bacon/Prevailing Wage: Wage Rate Interviews
  • Understanding Stationing
  • Leaning when and how to schedule Materials Testing
  • Learning what Field Work Directives/RFIs/Change Orders/Force Accounts are

Advanced Skills:

  • Understand how the bid items are measured and paid

  • Understand Special Provisions and their application

  • Ability to write a Pay Note with few corrections

  • Ability to use the Construction Manual with direction

  • Ability to write (Inspector Daily Report) IDR from the field as work progresses

  • Ability to use photos to document the project in IDR and daily progress photos

  • Work collaboratively with Resident Engineer (RE) & Documentation to understand Field Work Directives and how to enforce them with Contractor

  • Ability to build rapport with Contractor

  • How to read Construction Staking

  • Basic understanding of Construction Sequencing/Schedule

  • Know when to use neat line vs. average calculations

  • Know how to measure specific type of materials

  • Basic understanding of electrical work/utilities

  • Problem solving skills for more complex situations

  • Ability to understand HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt) paving and how to estimate quantities

  • Learning how to use a Smart Level

  • Basic understanding of LAG (Local Agency Guidelines) Manual and material testing frequency

  • Learning when and how to schedule Materials Testing

  • Basic understanding of shoring and extra excavation

  • Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of work.

  • Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Work Environment:

Physical Requirements:  

The physical requirements must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Intermittent sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, stoop, crawl, and lifting.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move light equipment up to 20 pounds.  Must be alert to equipment in the field, occasional need to work near hazardous equipment and machinery, occasional need to walk on uneven ground, exposure to dust, gas or fumes, exposure to noise, extremes in temperature or humidity, and potential work at heights.
