The Transcriptionist - Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for transcribing medical reports on operations, consultations, history and physical examinations, discharge summaries, progress records, electroencephalogram, psychiatric evaluation and other reports for inclusion in medical records using transcribing and dictation systems across Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) network.

The Transcriptionist - Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for transcribing medical reports on operations, consultations, history and physical examinations, discharge summaries, progress records, electroencephalogram, psychiatric evaluation and other reports for inclusion in medical records using transcribing and dictation systems across Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) network.
This is a remote position.
Responsibilties
A day in the life of a Transcriptionist - Health Information Management (HIM) at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Listens to the recorded dictation of physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribes reports into applicable report templates and formats.
- Edits dictation performed by speech recognition software and transcribes reports that are not processed through speech recognition.
- Transcribes forms of medical abbreviations and acronyms in accordance with department policy.
- Recognizes, evaluates and follows up on inconsistencies, errors and missing information within a without altering the meaning of the document or changing the dictator's style.
- Create templates as requested from physicians.
- Follows departmental quality and productivity standards.
- Maintain strict adherence to patient confidentiality according to HMH standards.
- Provides assistance to resolve interface errors and IT system disruptions.
- Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Maintains a daily downtime tracking report.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs with approved medical transcription course or equivalent experience in all aspects of medical transcription.
- Minimum 2 years medical transcription experience in an acute care hospital or other healthcare facility.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, surgery, diagnostic tests, radiology, pathology, and pharmacology.
- Experience with specialized transcription equipment (foot pedals) and voice recognition software.
- Superb listening and time management skills.
- Knowledge of medical transcription guidelines and practices.
- Minimum typing speed 60 words per minute and meets medical transcription accuracy standards with 160-170 lines per hour and with a minimum overall transcription performance rating of 98%.
- Ability to understand diverse accents and dialects and varying dictation styles.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.
- Medical Transcription Certification.
