Job Summary
The Operations Manager is responsible for managing production area activities as required to produce and ship products within quality, cost and service objectives in a short cycle manufacturing environment. The Operations Manager drives strategic lean initiatives to improve overall performance of their area. The Operations Manager has responsibility for the operations strategy and general management of the Leavenworth Plant. Serves as a key leader on the Leavenworth Leadership Team. Responsible for operations non-product financial budgets and performance. Establishes and inspires the operations culture and executional tone within the plant, with Hallmark internal customers, vendors and clients.
The Operations Manager promotes and implements strategic direction and champions significant changes in processes and participates in enhancing product development to positively impact the Hallmark business. The Operations Manager maintains strong relationships with plant management, key business partners and others who may affect productivity within their area. The Operations Manager must be adept at managing broad processes and be highly effective at leading problem solving. Possesses technical expertise and leadership for the implementation of innovative processes with a special emphasis/proficiency on the Lean tools. The Operations Manager possesses knowledge in pre-press and the manufacturing of printing tools. The Operations Manager takes the initiative to mentor new managers and staff in his/her area. They take the lead and coach regarding improvement activities, Kaizen events, and other problem solving opportunities.
Essential Duties and Accountabilities
Human Relations/People Management
- Acts as a representative of Hallmark to direct and indirect reports on all significant personnel and business activities.
- Responsible for developing relationships with key business partners.
- Ensures that appropriate cost effective, flexible staffing plans are in place to meet varying production and shipping requirements. Works with other areas and/or facilities, external temporary labor, and casual labor to accomplish production and shipping requirements.
- Is attentive to diversity and inclusion and employee relations issues in the workplace. Develops and maintains effective communications with internal and external customers which may affect area productivity.
- Coaches section managers and other exempt employees in performance management and talent development. Engages in key discipline and recognition activities.
- Models and holds others accountable for required leadership behaviors including, “See/Shape/Act”, leading as a Loyalist, and driving culture change.
- Develops and coaches employees to become problem solvers in order to continuously eliminate waste.
- Develops a culture that maximizes employee engagement.
- Is able to lead large groups of people (exempt and non-exempt) through major changes/ambiguity coming at an ever-increasing pace.
Project Management
- Responsible for driving the continuous improvement efforts for the area/processes that will reduce cost, improve productivity, and increase serviceability.
- Monitors, tracks, and implements key initiatives that will successfully allow the team to reach goals within the area and the plant.
Operational Management
- Develops and drives the area budgets and takes appropriate action to ensure expenditures are within established limits.
- Manages costs and throughput related to OEE/OPE, focusing on continually identifying and eliminating waste.
- Develops and maintains a thorough knowledge of production systems and procedures necessary to meet dynamic, time sensitive area production requirements.
- Generates and tests new business ideas, plus masters the use of lean tools and thinking to continuously improve work processes, flow and standard work. Coaches this in others within their group.
- Develops and implements strategies for the area that supports overall plant and company goals and communicates those strategies to area personnel.
- Ensures documented processes are in place for the area and updates as change is implemented.
- Champions efforts to develop and enhance processes through lean thinking and tools.
- Understands and can communicate key lean principles to develop lean knowledge in area and to attain area objectives.
- Possesses expertise with SAP (SCP & MTI).
Standard Work
- Ensures all aspects of effective quality procedures are met.
- Ensures all area personnel work in a safe, non-threatening, orderly environment with sound safety compliance standards and practices.
- Ensures their management team is managing to the metrics to improve plant performance; tracking, prioritizing, and solving problems; improving communications; challenging the status quo; and adhering to process execution discipline.
- Leads their team in the mindsets, capabilities, and behaviors.
- Performs confidently in formal and informal leadership roles frequently leading large teams with members from technical areas, operations line management and staff from production and other Hallmark divisions.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum 5 - 7 years of experience leading operations team(s)
- Experience in performance management
- Experience in continuous improvement techniques using Lean Principles
Preferred Qualifications
- STRONGLY PREFERRED: Experience with print technology and leading print teams
- Master's Degree or Printing/Engineering Degree
- Education in traditional supply chain diciplines
- Experience with capital plan management
- Knowledge of and experience managing Environmental Health and Safety
