Job Title: Firefighter- Part Time
Harris County Emergency Services District No. 16 (“District”) is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Part-Time Firefighter /EMT-Basic.
Responsibilities:
The Part-Time Firefighter will be assigned to work twelve (12) hour on-duty shifts based on availability.
The Part-Time Firefighter is expected to ride at least six (6) shifts per month to remain active.
Ability To:
1. Work cooperatively with other Klein Fire Department employees, members, and the public
2. Work at heights greater than ten (10) feet.
3. Perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 40 pounds or more, such as removing hose from apparatus, pulling ceilings, starting power equipment, and opening doors on the apparatus.
4. Observe or monitor people’s behavior to assess patient condition.
5. Communicate with customers, clients, or the public in face-to-face, and/or one on one settings, email, and telephone.
6. Understand, comprehend, and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
7. Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing job duties.
8. Work for long periods of time requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
9. Demonstrate acuity and ability of use of sense of sight and hearing to help determine the nature of an emergency and make operational decisions.
10. Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
11. Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
12. Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
13. Lift arms above shoulder level to cut vent holes with an axe or to force entry into automobiles using specialized equipment.
14. Learn job related material through structed lecture and reading and through verbal instruction and observation.
Physical Agility Test:
1. 100 ft. aerial climb and descend. Candidate must not stop and must be a smooth climb to the top of the platform (workout attire including helmet, gloves and SCBA) within 5 minutes. 3-minute rest period.
2. 40-yard 200 lb. Rescue Dummy Drag (workout attire including helmet, gloves, and SCBA). Candidate must drag the dummy without stopping within 2 minutes. 3-minute rest period.
3. 12 flights of stairs, 8-minute time limit (workout attire including helmet, gloves and SCBA). 3-minute rest period.
4. 1-mile run, 10 minutes time limit, applicant cannot stop or walk (regular workout attire).

Firefighter Skills Agility Test:
1. Extend and retract a 24-foot extension ladder to the second story of the training facility.
2. Start vent saw. Climb 24 ft ladder to the roof line and return to the ground
3. Catch hydrant using a 5-inch supply line while pulling 100 ft of hose and placing hydrant valve on the secondary cap.
4. Deploy a 1 ¾ inch attack line to the second story of training building and flow a continuous stream for 60 seconds.
5. Candidates will be required to wear a fire helmet, gloves and SCBS. Candidate will sign a liability waiver prior to performing.
Requirements/Qualifications:
1. Shall possess a current certification as a Basic firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
(“TCFP”).
2. Hold minimum current certification as an EMT-Basic by the Texas Department of Health and Services.
3. Must have a valid Texas Class B Exempt License or obtained within 6 months of hire and have an acceptable driving record.
4. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to read, write and fluently speak English.
5. Must be currently employed as a full-time firefighter at a department regulated by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
6. Must have NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications (or obtained within 6 months).
7. High School Diploma or equivalent.
8. Must be 21 years of age or older.
9. Must be a US Citizen by birth or naturalization or permanent resident.
10. Pass District Physical Ability Test (“PAT”).
11. Pass a background check.
12. Pass an entrance medical examination provided by the district along with a drug test.
Benefits:
Starting Wage: Starting Pay at $17.84 with 2-year, 4-year, 6-year and 10-year step
raises, additional $1.00 per hour when assigned to Driving Duties, and
$2.00 per hour when assigned to Office Duties.
(HCESD 16 Board evaluates additional annual raises for inflation.)
Holiday Pay: 2x Hourly Rate
Retirement: 457(b) Plan
(eligible after 12 consecutive full calendar months and a minimum of
1000 hours worked)
