For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.
Purpose: The intent of this Fellowship is to help increase the career interest and foster the professional development of potential Operating Room Nurses. This program is devoted to the role of the operating room nurse and designed to provide students with a foundational didactic and practical learning experience. The Fellowship will enhance the student’s education through direct observation of patient care and exposure to intra-operative nursing responsibilities. Opportunities to attend relavent internal educational programs and meetings with staff members at Hartford Healthcare hospitals will provide additional learning experiences for the nursing student.
Qualifications
Program Scope: The Operating Room Nursing Fellowship is for nursing students who are entering their senior year and who have a strong interest in Operating Room Nursing.
The fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of direct observational and learning experiences which will consist of a formal on-line, instructor facilitated course of study with specific objectives pertaining to the fundamentals of Operating Room nursing. Working together with the Nurse Educators, Perioperative Services and OR nurse preceptors; the students will gain exposure to:
1. Foundations of perioperative nursing practice
2. Professional role of perioperative nurse practice
3. Assessment in the perioperative setting
4. Ethics related to nursing practice and patient care in the peri-operative setting
5. Patient education
6. Quality, Safety and Risk management
7. Methods and practices to control and prevent infection in the perioperative setting.
Research Experience: The student fellow will be guided in a basic research experience related to operating room nursing. The project culminates with a poster presentation to the Fellowship group, OR instructors, faculty and nursing team.
Program Schedule: The program will span eight (8) weeks in length, beginning June 6, 2022 and will be conducted at Hartford Health Care sites. The student will be assigned to one of the following sites:
- Backus Hospital
- Charlotte Hungerford Hospital
- Hartford Hospital
- Hospital of Central Connecticut
- Midstate Medical Center
- St. Vincent’s Medical Center
- Windham Hospital
