We are seeking a Process Improvement (Engineering) Intern based in Elgin, IL (Northwest of Chicago) to support the implementation of specific projects to improve current manufacturing process. As HARTING specializes in industrial-grade electrical connectors, our facility includes the manufacturing of steel and thermoplastics hoods and housings and custom cable assemblies.
HARTING's Intern Development Program (Summer 2024) consists of full-time, paid, and on-site internships. Our internships are an opportunity to work on hands-on projects with your team, to work cross-functionally with other departments, and gain exposure to the technical aspects of our company. Please note: we do not provide housing in Illinois.
You will have the opportunity to be exposed to the following:
- Actively participate in gaining understanding of current processes in the manufacturing facility and warehouse.
- Gain familiarity with current process improvement projects and recent improvement successes.
- Use your fresh engineer eyes and creativity to propose ideas for improvements.
- Collect process data, create charts, and formulate insights from the information to suggest process changes.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, industrial engineering, quality, warehouse, and production operators to support assignments and implement processes to promote lean floor processes.
- Job shadow operators to learn current manufacturing processes, conduct time studies of processes, and update visuals of standard operating procedures.
- Formulate metrics for improvement and compile data to continually review progress.
- Create one-pagers to communicate about implemented process improvements (emphasizing the benefits and promoting a continuous improvement culture).
Skills and experience to thrive in this role:
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5S principles
- A process / continuous improvement mindset
- Experience with process stimulations such as Minitab
