Position Description
The position reports to the magazine's editor-in-chief.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Manage the editorial operations of a startup newsroom.
- Establish and refine processes and workflow for print and digital, including maintaining editorial schedules in our project management tool.
- Oversee and contribute to copy editing and fact-checking for print and digital copy.
- Develop and edit feature stories, working almost exclusively with freelancers
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, with a focus on grant opportunities from foundations and other funders of nonprofit journalism
- Collaborate with colleagues within the magazine staff and across Harvard Chan on podcasts, events, and other three-dimensional journalism content
- Perform other duties as assigned

Job Summary
Harvard Public Health, a magazine of ideas and insights for a healthier world, is seeking a creative, detail-oriented, and versatile Managing Editor to join its team.
We seek a process-minded editor capable of both establishing and maintaining editorial workflows and developing engaging, high-impact stories and packages. In addition, we envision this person spending about 30 percent of their time pursuing journalism grants to support these stories. The ideal candidate will be collaborative, ambitious, well-organized and deadline oriented. A passion for non-fiction narrative, ability to edit without impeding writers' voice, a strong sense of story, and a penchant for details are all expected. A network of strong freelancers with magazine sensibilities is a plus, as is experience writing or editing science and policy stories.
Harvard Public Health is an independent journalism platform, published by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. With three print issues a year and a dynamic online presence, the publication is dedicated to changing the narrative of public health.
