Job Purpose
The Transportation Supervisor will supervise the day-to-day operations of the transportation department. Effectively handle operational issues as they arise and elevate issues/concerns to upper management. Provide coaching and counseling to drivers to provide superior customer service while operating in a safe manner. Assure compliance to paperwork, collections, policies, procedures and regulatory compliance. Instrumental in assuring that the expectations of both the external and internal customer is met. Exercise sound judgment in decision making.
Key Responsibilities
The Transportation Supervisor will be assigned duties, based on organizational needs and priorities.
Supervise and lead a safe and efficient Transportation Department – Safety is critical
Must be knowledgeable of all SFD Safety Policies and Procedures and hold others accountable to compliance
Supervise and overseeing all transportation personnel (i.e. attendance, presentable and professional appearance, proper use of equipment, etc.)
Assist in the development and implementing procedures specific to Sherwood’s Atlanta division
Assisting in payroll functions and verifying payroll information (i.e. weekly component pay sheets)
Adhere to all governmental and Company regulations / policies (DOT, USDA, FDA, OSHA, FMLA, etc), elevate issues to upper management immediately
Communicate daily with drivers on business needs, issues that include, but are not limited to, customer service, routing, equipment needs, and sales
Assist in thorough accident investigations as needed, including employee accidents/incidents, truck accidents/incidents and product damage, per SFD’s accident investigation procedures. Suggest corrective actions as needed and implement after necessary approvals
Counsel and discipline drivers as needed following established protocol and keeping upper management involved. Supervisor may only suspend, they do not terminate
Communicating many times daily with Operations Manager regarding warehouse issues as well as routing or special needs regarding customers
Research shortages on trucks and determine root cause
Schedule drivers and equipment for routes
Communicate daily with the sales department on operational issues / matters keeping the lines of communication open. Issues may include routing, driver issues, customer needs, below minimum orders, out of route deliveries, terms, delivery areas, new customers, etc.
Communicate with buyers regarding backhauls as needed
Communicate daily with Ryder about maintenance and repairs as well as scheduling PMs. Follow through on open issues until item is resolved
Monitoring equipment needs and usage, elevating issues in a timely manner
Back up router using Roadnet as needed (i.e. must be cross trained)
Must be aware and knowledgeable of all Administrative duties and be able to provide backup / coverage when needed
Monitor scheduling and staffing of drivers, and document call off reasons and write drivers up for attendance violations
Assist in performance reviews twice a year
Oversee adhere to cash collection protocols and immediately elevate issues / concerns to upper management
Ensure the cleanliness of equipment and that it is in proper working order
Other duties as many be assigned by management
Qualifications and Experience

High School Diploma or GED Required
Working knowledge of DOT regulations
Strong organizational skills and able to effectively handle multiple items at one time
Able to work effectively under stress
Effective interpersonal skills, values diversity
Strong verbal and written skills
Proficiency in Microsoft office, Word, Excel, Outlook
Effectively use Food Distribute software to research operational issues
Able to effectively facilitate two-way communication between the customer and the employee
Ability to create a sense of urgency within the team and for yourself
Employee is expected to adhere to attendance guidelines
High school diploma and equivalent training and experience, college degree preferred
2 years’ experience in transportation supervision
Prior routing experience preferred
Prior experience as a CDL driver and warehouse person preferred
Two or more years of experience in related field of trucking / distribution
Data entry experience required
