What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Writer - Autocar position at Haymarket?
We are Haymarket Media Group. We’re a leading international specialist media, information and technology business. We produce over 60 market-leading brands and services created by almost 2,000 people in the UK, US, India, Hong Kong, Singapore and Germany.
Our Headquarters are in Twickenham and we have over 60 years of heritage in developing brands which are thought leaders, living at the heart of the communities they serve.
We’re redefining media: our award-winning talent is innovating new and entrepreneurial ways to connect with audiences and create value. And those brands are trusted by millions of professionals and consumers to help them make decisions that matter.
Autocar is seeking an enthusiastic journalist to join the team as staff writer.
Key responsibilities include:
- Help write the daily online news output for Autocar, working closely with the news editor to decide story priorities, and the online team to ensure stories are effectively promoted on social media.
- Assist the news editor in the planning and implementation of Autocar’s news coverage both online and in the magazine
- Assist the wider editorial team in the daily running of Autocar, including planning and sourcing elements for features, and writing editorial for all sections of the magazine and online as required
- Help the news editor ensure Autocar gets the best access to cars in advance. This will mean knowing exactly what’s coming out when, and ensuring an embargo is never missed.
- Obtain bespoke commentary and additional information to enhance Autocar’s coverage of widely circulated news stories.
- Help ensure the ‘What’s Coming When?’ and other evergreen stories are constantly and accurately updated.
- Work with the news editor on all news planning, and be prepared to stand-in for the news editor when they are out of the office either working or on leave
- Work with the wider Autocar team to assist them as needed in other tasks
- Help maintain Autocar’s industry-leading motor show and event coverage, likely by working from the office to help ensure stories and coverage from reporters goes online in a timely fashion
- Help manage Autocar’s social media channels, and use your skills and ideas to grow them: Facebook and Instagram clear areas for growth for Autocar in particular
- Improve and develop your news gathering and writing skills. Become a big hitter, building up a contacts book, so you are at the cutting edge of breaking big scoop stories, and have the ability to turn one line of intel into a full-blown cover scoop.
- Sharpen headline skills, subbing skills, and magazine craft
- Go on relevant events as directed by the editor, executive editor and news editor. Don’t expect to be driving Ferraris around Italy or interviewing CEOs: expect to spend a lot of time in photo studios and press events - but expect to emerge with plenty of stories in your notepad.
Other benefits include:
-
Competitive salary
-
Comprehensive training and career development programme
-
25 days holiday per year (increasing 1 day per year of service up to 30 days)
-
Generous contributory pension scheme
-
Season ticket loan on passing probationary period
-
Flexible benefits scheme to suit your lifestyle
