Job Summary and Qualifications
The ECMO Coordinator is a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, or perfusionist who serves in the role of subject matter expert, educator, consultant, and scholar to plan, coordinate, and implement and daily operations of the St. David's Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program at multiple sites across the Austin Market. This role encompasses organization of human, fiscal and other resources, development of personnel, compliance with regulatory and professional standards, strategic planning and fostering of collaborative relationships. The ECMO Coordinator aligns with team leaders to conduct an evidence-based program focused to achieve exceptional patient outcomes. The ECMO Coordinator acts as the lead ECMO Specialist (ES) and participates in direct patient care as needed. This role oversees and ensures ECMO practices are concurrent with hospital, operational, and strategic goals, policies, and guidelines, and makes improvements where possible. The ECMO Coordinator works in close collaboration with Perfusion and ES teams regarding initiation, management, and removal of ECMO. The ECMO Coordinator develops and adapts the ECMO training curriculum to meet the educational needs of staff associated with the program and reviews proficiency of ES staff, including clinical competency, decision making, and professional conduct. The ECMO Coordinator provides feedback to leaders on ES performance as deemed necessary. The ECMO Coordinator pursues quality and excellence by conducting case reviews, pursuing performance improvement initiatives, and sharing program outcomes and statistics with program, site, and divisional leaders. The ECMO Coordinator monitors program data collection and ensures accurate record keeping and data abstraction for the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry. The ECMO Coordinator keeps current with new developments and research related to ECMO, including networking with other ECMO centers both within and outside the HCA enterprise. The ECMO Coordinator is involved in product evaluation and assessment and will assist with program development and implementation of new technology.
- You will coordinate care of ECMO patients from candidate evaluation, selection, priming emergency management, and short and long-term follow-up care across the Austin Market sites of care for the St. David's HealthCare ECMO Program.
- You will provide patient, family, and staff education. Ensure appropriate in-service with staff and physicians on new equipment and supplies.
- You will serve as resource to multidisciplinary team caring for ECMO patients, providing expertise in device operation and troubleshooting. Develops and maintains ECMO technologies quality control, collection, analysis, and dissemination of data to appropriate parties.
- You will develop policies, procedures, and standards of care and continuous quality improvement activities for the program.
- You will assume a leadership role in the clinical setting.
- You will accurately identify and diagnose issues, devise alternatives, implement plans, and evaluates and communicates results.
- You will consult with medical providers, nursing and associated allied health staff on ECMO management and interventions.
- You will seek consultation from medical directors as required to facilitate ECMO management.
- You will assess functionality of equipment and collaborates with Biomed, Facilities, and Manufacturers in the scheduling, timing, and performance of regular preventative maintenance on ECMO equipment.
- You will monitor ECMO supply inventory and ensure ongoing replenishment.
- You will monitor ECMO equipment performance and ensure timely repairs or replacements.
- You will assist in the preparation of departmental budget, projecting reasonable activity levels and expenses required to achieve approved net margin for work unit(s). Operate work unit(s) within approved budget.
- You will assist in the overall operation of the hospital through active participation in projects aimed at achieving the hospital's mission and incorporate the values of the hospital in day-to-day activities.
- You will perform as an expert clinician with extensive knowledge of ECMO for all phases of patient care.
- You will ensure patient care practices are compliant with policy, procedures, and guidelines.
- You will develop skill set in priming ECMO circuits, rapid initiation of ECMO, and removal of ECMO.
- You will assure that patient equipment and supplies are available and in working order.
- You will manage equipment, supplies, and charges in conjunction with hospital liaisons. You will perform Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure. Comply with all Point of Care quality control standards.
- You will ensure medical record documentation is timely, accurate and complete.
- You will initiate and maintain communication and collaboration with providers, nursing, allied health, leadership, and patients/families to develop, implement, and evaluate a patient plan of care.
- You will actively participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds, sharing clinical expertise in ECMO.
- You will assist in organization and implementation of the ECMO transport service.
- You will facilitate ECMO case reviews with the medical directors and associated nursing and allied health staff.
- You will cascade important information across Austin Market ECMO sites and HCA enterprise as appropriate.
- You will assist in competency reviews of staff. Identify learning needs of staff members, and in collaboration with Nursing Education, develops plans to meet educational needs.
- You will develop and/or review educational information related to ECMO for patients and families.
- You will identify patient/family education needs and ensures adequate information sharing.
- You will provide classroom training, bedside orientation, and skills lab precepting for bedside staff providing direct care.
- You will facilitate onboarding for ES team with knowledge of hospital/departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
What qualifications you will need:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- Registered Nurse, or RRT/Respiratory Care Practitioner (RRT / RCP), or Perfusionist
- Bachelors Degree, or Associate Degree
- 2 years of relevant experience
- Preferred: Sound knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and critical care nursing and or critical care respiratory therapy.
