Supervisory responsibilities

This role will supervise the Technical Services group, including allocating assignments, mentoring and coaching, managing performance and implementing progressive discipline as needed.

Essential job duties
  1. Oversee Technical Services group
  2. Recommend and implement methods to increase quality and decrease the internal cost of products and/or services
  3. Complete production changeover walkthrough inspections
  4. Manage product deviations, complaints and investigations
  5. Generate and review process validation documents for processes
  6. Train the production team on new and recurring commercial batch processes
  7. Trouble-shoot production issues for both commercial and non-commercial scale-ups
  8. Lead customer meetings and routing communication to update status of a project or investigation
  9. Plan and execute appropriate research techniques towards the solution of various chemical problems arising in the synthesis, analysis, development or production of chemical substances or drugs in the plant
  10. Use a broad spectrum of practical laboratory skills as needed; including advanced methods of purification of solvents and reagents, running reactions under anhydrous and oxygen free conditions, and using advanced methods for isolation/purification of sensitive materials
  11. Remain alert to the chemical literature especially in regard to recent developments vital to our processes and area of interest. Impart new chemical information and research techniques to junior chemical staff and manufacturing personnel
  12. Comply with requests for synthesis and/or analysis of chemical intermediates, drugs, and potential drugs for patent protection and/or analytical standards
  13. Communicate effectively in verbal and written form on research results, issues, and plans. Contribute suggestions to coworkers
  14. Train and develop skills related to manipulation and analysis of organic chemicals in junior staff
  15. Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices and follow responsible actions regarding chemical disposal. Maintain compliance with all regulations at the federal, state, and local levels. Maintain a current, easily understood laboratory notebook
  16. Remain current with Company policy regarding compliance with validation of bulk pharmaceutical chemicals
  17. Participate in safety evaluations as required to support hazard assessment and HAZOP reviews
  18. Manage workload and time to enable the incumbent to perform multiple projects effectively, and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed on a timely basis. Adapt to changing priorities such that productivity is unaffected
  19. Find new and better ways of performing job by challenging established procedures
  20. Require minimal supervision and bring assignments to completion independently
  21. Discuss routinely with supervisor the status of assigned programs and potential problems
  22. Work to organize work time so that several reactions are run concurrently. Use time efficiently to produce target compounds with investigation of side reactions being normally given low priority
  23. Participate in self-development activities and training of others
  24. Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices
Education, experience, certification and licensures

· Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or related field or equivalent experience

· Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in pharmaceutical development or manufacturing, including 5 years in a management role

  3. Must be self-driven
  4. Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar packages
  5. Must possess excellent writing skills
  6. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  7. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  8. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  9. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  10. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  11. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
