HDR is looking for a GIS Analyst Intern to join our team in Glen Allen, Virginia developing and implementing geospatial solutions. Duties include working in a professional environment with a multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental sciences consulting firm. The ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, both technical and non-technical, is required. Ideal candidates will have a solid understanding of GIS and expertise with Esri software. We are interested in someone who is passionate, self-motivated, and has a strong desire to research, learn, and grow as a GIS professional; someone who can appropriately apply technology to solve problems and provide services to our clients. Successful candidates will be able to develop database schemas and analysis methods needed to support project goals and efficiently use web resources to research and problem solve. Our projects include geospatial solutions for desktop, web, and mobile.

Primary Responsibilities
In the role of GIS Analyst Intern, we'll count on you to:
* Independently conduct advanced spatial analyses us ArcGIS software from Esri and work with project managers and clients to design and effectively employ GIS on transportation planning projects
* Develop geodatabase schemas and analysis methods needed to support project goals
* Develop and support web GIS application using Esri Web App Builder, Story Maps, Collector, Field Maps, Survey 123 within the ArcGIS online platform
* Create maps, databases and other deliverables on short notice
* Communicate and collaborate with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, both technical and non-technical
* Perform quality control checks
* Perform other duties as needed
Required Qualifications
* Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Geography, Planning, Engineering degree or related program
* Proficient use of Esri ArcGIS (ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro) and ArcGIS extensions for map production, analysis, and database development
* Experience with ArcGIS Online and mobile ArcGIS platforms, including setup of applications for data collection coordination
* Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, effective time management, and the ability to work and learn independently or with a team
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Proficient Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) skills
* Experience in the query and acquisition of publicly available datasets
* Be able to meet tight deadlines
* The ability to interact with diverse teams in a positive and proactive manner
* An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience using Adobe Illustrator or related graphic software for enhancing the quality of GIS maps
* Practical GIS intern experience
* Familiarity with transportation data (roads and highways, rail, multi-use corridors) is a plus
* Experience in scripting, database management, and software development is a plus
* Preference is given to local candidates
