HDR is seeking a Mid-Level Geologist or Hydrogeologist with 5 or more years of experience. The successful candidate may be based in HDR’s Boise, Idaho office, but other locations will also be considered. This individual will support our ongoing project workload. The primary duties of this position include a range of scientific, monitoring, testing, remediation, and modeling services for a variety of environmental and water projects such as industrial facilities including food and beverage and food processing, power stations, abandoned and operating mines, water supplies impacted by pollutants including emerging contaminants (e.g. PFAS), and water supply assessments for a growing population. This position requires a versatile professional that is eager to learn and values the opportunity for professional development through a variety of project assignments. The position will require travel/fieldwork (up to 50%) with most work conducted in southern Idaho but may require support for other projects throughout the northwest.
In the role of Geologist II or Hydrogeologist II, we'll count on you to
- Help design and conduct field studies and be responsible for data collection, compilation and analysis for a variety of geology and/or hydrogeology-related projects.
- Coordinate scheduled fieldwork and labor amongst multiple business groups.
- Complete geologic logging of borings and monitoring well drilling followed by conversion to electronic boring logs.
- Complete multi-media sampling (soil, soil gas, groundwater, etc.) including coordination with laboratories, data analysis, and reporting.
- Conduct hydrogeologic and hydraulic testing and analysis.
- Develop groundwater contour maps and assist with groundwater modeling.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues that may arise in the field. Assist and help support training for junior level staff including field sampling and data collection techniques. Communicate issues in a timely manner to team members and supervisor.
- Draft technical memos and reports. Tabulate data and compare to appliable agency action limits,
- Prepare environmental permit documents on behalf of clients for regulatory agency compliance, coordinate and complete permitting project.
- Maintain environmental and fieldwork databases.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
- Work both independently on small projects and as part of larger project teams to assist senior personnel.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science or closely related field.
- At least five (5) years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, geologist or closely aligned profession. Advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.D.) in one of the above fields may be considered in lieu of the required experience.
- OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification (or ability to obtain certification within 2 months).
- Demonstrated experience conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and similar contaminated site investigations involving sample collection and analysis of multiple media that may include soil, soil gas, groundwater, surface water, and sediment.
- Experience with developing quality assurance project plans, sampling and analysis plans, and/or waste management plans. Developing these plans in accordance with CERCLA and RCRA is a plus.
- Experience conducting technical evaluations and data computation to evaluate support compliance and contaminant fate and transport evaluations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of conceptual site models and the ability to critically analyze these models to identify data gaps and inform field investigation scoping activities.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing drilling, well installation, and pump tests in consolidated and unconsolidated formations.
- Demonstrated basic working skills with GIS, Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Blue Beam/similar pdf software.
- Strong technical writing skills.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Geologist (PG) certification or geologist in training (GIT) status with near term pursuit of PG certification.
- Prior experience with Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Federal environmental regulations (CERCLA, RCRA, CWA, CAA, etc.).
- Prior geological/hydrogeological experience in Idaho or surrounding northwest states.
- Experience developing Geographic Information System (GIS) projects and coverages in Arcview/ArcGIS.
- Experience conducting site investigation using high resolution site characterization techniques.
- Experience with environmental permitting.
- Basic knowledge of Idaho well construction regulations a plus.
- Experience preparing technical reports, well diagrams and boring logs.
- Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
- Local candidates preferred.
