The Area Manager organizes, plans and directs activities to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations. This position is responsible for directing the team on the line about their purpose, the value of their role, tasks and procedures in the processing and packaging of products in their assigned areas. The Area Manager will provide direction consistent with plant goals and trains team members in all areas by matching skills and motivation factors with job requirements. This position is also responsible for performing work in a safe, responsible manner and following all safety rules and procedures.
The employee's primary duty must be the performance of office or non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of Helena or Helena's customers. This also includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgement with respect to matters of significance.
What your day may look like
- Directs area team members across multiple shifts in quality line performance.
- Ensures that all formulations and packaging meet customer specifications and takes corrective and preventive actions for packaging delays in the assigned area.
- Gives work directions, resolves problems, prepares work schedules, staffs positions and sets deadlines to ensure maximum efficiency of workflow and timely completion of products.
- Evaluates current operating procedures and implements alternative methods designed for improvement of work.
- Manages the line preparation for the next day's work to ensure it is completed 24 hours in advance.
- Sets up equipment as needed.
- Develops both a production and team work schedule in conjunction with Production Supervisors and/or Crew Leaders that meets customer demands and ensures maximum efficiency by giving work directions and resolving problems.
- Maintains an understanding of all quality assurance methodology for products managed to ensure that all quality requirements, processes and procedures are met.
- Provides training in all phases of production operation, including operation of equipment, safety, packaging and line troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Monitors and maintains rates and on-stream time to achieve maximum operational efficiency.
- Manages inventory costs of process and packaging lines by daily review of lab data and raw materials consumption. Compares this to expected results and makes process and team adjustments as needed.
- Determines mixture of full-time and temporary worker needs based on production schedule and customer needs.
- Manages headcount to minimize overtime.
- Establishes relationships with customers that supports HI's RAPIDS core values and Trusted Resource brand in the industry
- Ensures that all production teams enter accurate and timely data and recording of production transactions in OPM.
- Audits and trains team members on the use of PDA for labor assignments to batches and activities.
- Analyzes all production reports and consolidates into leadership and customer reports.
- Creates and conducts leader and customer presentations.
- Enforces adherence to all plant safety rules and regulations in assigned area.
- Performs housekeeping audits and ensures that corrective actions are taken by the teams on the assigned shift and in the assigned area to maintain a clean work environment both inside and outside the facility.
- Other work-related duties as assigned by leader.
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Education and experience needed for this position
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, engineering or related field is required.
- Five years of work experience in a manufacturing environment is required.
- A high school diploma or equivalent and 10 years of manufacturing experience (five years must be supervisory experience) will be considered.
- HI manufacturing experience is preferred.

Your work environment and the physical aspects of the job
There are potential hazards associated with any chemical manufacturing business but at Helena Industries safety is our highest priority. We seek out extensive safety measures including engineered solutions and personal protective equipment and put them in place to minimize exposure to anything that could potentially be harmful to our employees.
The work environment for this position is that of a typical plant environment where the noise level is usually moderate to loud. In this position, you will regularly work near moving equipment/mechanical parts and could be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, chemical and biological hazards, vibrations and a risk of electrical shock. This position requires you to use your hands for many different tasks and to talk, hear, walk, stand and sit. You may be occasionally required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
Lab and office positions at the plant would only have occasional exposure if they must go out into the plant.
