SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Zoonotic and Vector borne Diseases section, the research assistant (RA) will support laboratory purchase needs, perform quality checks on equipment, maintain QA and QC records, and laboratory support duties. The primary responsibilities of this position include clerical/administrative work but will also include performing routine technical and non-technical laboratory procedures for processing specimens, including receiving and organizing the storage of specimens and serving as a liaison between the ZVBD section and its and administrative staff and vendors. The RA may also perform basic/limited laboratory duties to assist with diagnostic and surveillance testing as needed. The position is located in Richmond, CA.
Salary range for this position is $20/Hour to $27/Hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ordering and Purchasing laboratory reagents and supplies as needed.
- Use databases such as StarLIMS and Access for data entry, locating patient information, routing samples for testing, and tracking pending samples.
- Maintain QA and QC records for the laboratory when necessary.
- Update, organize and maintain laboratory databases and freezer inventories.
- Prepares reports and updates internal staff, administrative staff, and stakeholders
- Contribute to and maintain laboratory organization.
- Prepare reagents and media for use in diagnostic testing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word suite programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
- Other duties as necessary in the laboratory or office when deemed necessary.

- Adheres to departmental policies and procedures regarding attendance, leave, and conduct
- Incumbent must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing with public health and healthcare professionals, and other CDPH employees
- Familiarity with:
- Laboratories, sterile technique, and microbiological concepts
- Standard precautions for working with potential infectious clinical specimens
Education/Experience
- Prefer (but not required) candidates with some college course work in a laboratory science such as chemistry, microbiology and/or molecular biology.
- Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, with course work in chemistry, microbiology, and/or molecular biology is preferred, but not required.
