Performs a variety of Pacemaker function procedures as ordered by the physician, utilizing established standard operating procedures.
The Pacemaker Technician is responsible for coordinating the workflow of cardiac monitor devices, pacemakers, defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization devices. This person is responsible for monitoring and review of cardiac rhythms in person as well as from remote transmissions from multiple vendors/manufacturer web based systems.
This includes interpretation of device measurements, interpretation of complex arrhythmias, analyze data that reflects clinical scenarios, and retrieval and triage of that information. The information is compiled and summarized as a report for entry to the electronic medical record ensuring physician evaluation with appropriate billing.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs procedures to evaluate pacemaker functioning and prepares preliminary report interpretations.
- Performs EKG, routine clerical, and other related duties as required. Must be able to prepare patients for examination and treatment. Takes patients vital signs, reviews medications, obtain history from EMR.
- Prepares the patient for the procedure by education and obtaining and recording medical history prior to procedure. Responsible for obtaining data, documenting arrhythmia strips and device interrogation utilizing PaceArt software and current EMR, follow through of results notifying physician, APP, or RN as appropriate per protocol, and provide patient with appropriate follow up instructions as delegated by RN/APP/MD.
- Provides general information on departmental policies and procedures as appropriate to patient’s questions or concerns. Must be able to provide very technical education to patients, family members, or significant others regarding use of arrhythmia monitors (holter, loop, event recorders, and mobile telemetry), implanted device monitoring, appropriate testing follow us as necessary and as directed by the nurse, APP, or physician.
- Alerts physician, staff nurse, and/or manager of any acute abnormalities. Must be able to identify limitations and seek advice of the nurses, APPs and physicians as appropriate.
- Must be able to work as a team member and be able to adapt to a constantly changing environment.
- Maintains equipment, laboratory, and workspace. Orders and maintains clinic supplies and equipment as directed. Prepares and maintain supplies for arrhythmia testing, device interrogations, wound care, and other diagnostic test such as ECG.
- Attends continuing educational programs. Participates in professional development activities to keep abreast of current changes and trends in the health care industry.
- Keeps current on rapidly developing technologies requiring continual updates on technical aspects of cardiac implantable electronic devices.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
- Maintains BCLS certification.
- Initiates patient charges.
- Assists in orientation and training of staff and/or students.
- Prepares for Pacemaker Support Group meetings.
- Participates in Inpatient cardiac device interrogations daily as needed throughout the hospital system as well as one day post-implantation checks.
- Interrogates and program CIEDs as appropriate in the MRI setting.
- The pacemaker technician will be involved in research protocols as directed providing device specific measurements and data as necessary.
- Participates in QA data collection as directed.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
Personal Interaction:
Daily contacts are made with Pacemaker laboratory team members, physicians, patients, and families to provide information.
Pay Grade G22
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Minimum of one to two (1-2) years of experience in Pacemaker laboratory or completion of cardiac device training program.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
BCLS Certification.
