The Heritage Health Dentist provides high quality dental care in accordance with national guidelines to all Heritage Health patients in a culturally competent manner. The Heritage Health dentist strives to provide dental care consistent with Heritage Health's mission statement. The Heritage Health's dentist is a strong leader who treats all staff with respect and supports teamwork and a positive work environment.

The Heritage Health's dentist examines and treats patients, regardless of age or sex; ensures proper dental care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and recovery; diagnosis and treatment of injuries and malformations of teeth, gums, and related oral structures; examines patients to assess condition, utilizing x-rays, dental instruments, and other diagnostic procedures; cleans, fills, extracts, and replaces teeth; provides preventative dental services to patients and education in oral and dental hygiene; requests necessary tests and follow-up visits and refers patients to specialists, as necessary.

Requirements:
  • Completion of ADA accredited dental program required: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).
  • Active Idaho dental license.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Certification through Drug Enforcement Agency and valid Idaho licenses required; must be able to secure credentialing through identified agencies; effective oral and written communication skills required; previous experience working with under-served population desired.

Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within dentistry. Able to work independently, but also within a group, contributing to the efforts of the entire team. Able to effectively manage and direct dental staff support activities while providing quality dental care. Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications. Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills. Able to work with frequent interruptions and to respond appropriately to unexpected situations. Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Achieve Results

  • Directly affects improvements in patient well-being through accurate and timely diagnosis and delivery of high quality dental treatment. Ensures the delivery of competent, accurate, dental care and treatment to all patients as assigned.
  • Provides leadership and direction to other dental clinic staff. Affects overall clinic results. Meets or exceeds all measurable standards of care, including overall clinical, quality and productivity goals.
  • Ensures accuracy, efficiency and appropriate confidentiality with patient charting and related recordkeeping and administrative functions as assigned.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensures the delivery of all dental treatment and care is consistent with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards, including clinic policies and quality initiatives.
  • Understands and ensures all practices and procedures related to the delivery of dental services are consistent with contracted protocols and procedures.

Relationship Management

  • Develops and ensures favorable relationships with all patients and their families. Ensures all patient services are delivered in a caring and professional manner.
  • Develops and ensures favorable relationships with vendors, contractors and payor sources.
  • Develops and ensures ongoing, positive relationships and collaboration with other dentists and dental staff members. Ensures the success of each clinic operation through collaborative support and working relationships with all clinic operations staff.

Professionalism & Stewardship

  • Ensures all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner at all times.
  • Upholds and ensures compliance and attention to all corporate policies and procedures as well as the overall mission and values of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  1. Schedules dental care visits per agreed upon FTE status.
  2. Ability to see a minimum of 14 patients per clinical day with 2 Dental Assistants as support staff
  3. Provides routine and emergency dental services, including diagnosis and treatment plans, general restorative procedures, crown and bridge construction, removable prosthetics, uncomplicated endodontics and oral surgery as well as various preventative services as directed by the Chief Medical Director or Dental Director.
  4. Performs assigned dental tasks using high level of skills and ability.
  5. Administers and prescribes anesthetics and medications.
  6. Initiates and interprets x-ray and lab studies.
  7. Ensures all prescriptions and advice regarding medications is in accordance with accepted community standards and Heritage Health protocols.
  8. Exercises professional judgement in the performance of services provided consistent with the organizations policies and the standards of the dental profession
  9. Understands and follows infection control procedures, consistent with OSHA and OSAP standards.
  10. Reviews medical histories at each visit; consults with primary health care provider as indicated.
  11. Diagnoses dental disease, oral pathology, and develops a written treatment plan, prioritizing treatments.
  12. Demonstrates high degree of knowledge and competency in the practice of dentistry and associated charting requirements.
  13. Charts all pathologic conditions and reports findings to the patient (caregiver or guardian).
  14. Explains course of treatment to the patient; solicits his/her input and agreement.
  15. Balances treatment plan on patient's needs and desires, and in conjunction with patient and clinic resources.
  16. Conducts follow-up patient care
  17. Refers patients for specialty care to other clinic programs or outside agencies as appropriate and follow up communication as needed.
  18. Provides dental and oral health education to patients and families.
  19. Actively participates in community dental programs.
  20. Utilizes and monitors effectiveness and efficiency of all equipment and supplies used in the delivery of services and recommend dental equipment changes and additions.
  21. Participates in the development and implementation of provider productivity standards.
  22. Assists in reviewing clinic productivity, scheduling procedures, and establishing guidelines for care and treatment.
  23. Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  24. Represents Heritage Health at conferences, meetings and continuing education programs.
  25. Participates in precepting dental assisting students, dental hygiene students and dental students as required.
  26. Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with fellow employees, physicians and patients
  27. Builds relationships that foster a high level of customer service.
  28. Manages difficult clients and patients, demonstrating interpersonal savvy and influence skills.
  29. Ensures confidentiality of patient information and displays knowledge of HIPAA requirements
  30. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
  31. Attends all monthly staff meetings and other meetings as requested.
  32. Assists with in-service and on-going training of clinical staff.
  33. Performs other duties as assigned or indicated.
  34. Participates on QA/QI activities or on other committees to promote better practice within the health centers.
  35. Implements and evaluates operational and administrative processes.
  36. Role models strong leadership skills and promotes teamwork.
  37. Provides supervision to Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienists as assigned
  38. Follows all clinical protocols and procedures as outlined in the Provider Handbook.
  39. Actively supports decision making of the Senior Management team. Performs other duties as requested.
