Herzog Services, Inc. is currently looking for Assistant Operators in the Eastern, Western and Central locations of the United States. This unique career opportunity is ideally suited for "Road Warriors" interested in nationwide travel. Herzog Operators use state of the art technology to provide rail maintenance to the Class 1 Railroads across the United States.

This career opportunity offers paid training, competitive salary starting at $60,000 annually with the potential to earn up to $95,000 annually, and per diem of $155/day. Duties and Responsibilities:

*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.

  • Assistant Operators will be required to engage in specific railroad safety courses and may be required to become Rules Qualified to be permitted to operate a motorized vehicle while on rail. These qualifications may be required to be renewed periodically to maintain status.
  • Lubrication of all grease points on the chassis and proprietary testing equipment
  • Overall cleanliness of the interior, exterior and mechanical workings of the test vehicle
  • Maintaining and organizing parts, supplies and consumable inventories
  • Fuel and any other necessary fluids and materials for proper daily operation of the vehicle
  • Preventative Maintenance (Oil Changes, etc.)
  • Compliance with all regulations pertaining to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, including logbooks and inspections
  • Operation of the vehicle at speeds and direction in accordance to testing requirements
  • Safe operation of the vehicle on rail in accordance to specific and general safety regulations
  • Assisting the Chief Operator with test data markers as required
  • Assisting the Chief Operator with marking defects
  • Maintaining equipment and other necessary functions of the test system
  • Drive a Hy-rail equipped rail testing vehicle on and off railroad tracks.
  • Train to become a chief operator.
  • Able to work independently or in a team environment
  • Able to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain high performance level of dependability, reliability, and safety.
  • Must be able to cover travel expenses (if required) until 1st paycheck is processed (approximately 7-10 days after start date)
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Be on-call and prepared to travel at moment’s notice.
  • Other duties as assigned

Travel Requirements:

  • Extensive travel and time away from your home area within the contiguous 48 states are to be expected. We strive to place employees within reasonable distances from their home area, therefore, tours have the potential to last 5-week periods with 2 days home in between each tour.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Previous NDT/NDE/NDI experience is preferred but is not required.
  • Previous railroad experience would be beneficial but is not required.
  • Previous commercial vehicle driving experience preferred.
  • Previous light mechanical repair experience preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification.
  • Subject to motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
  • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements for this position.

  • Work in extreme all-weather conditions; uneven surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces over sometimes great distances while maintaining balance.
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds overhead; occasionally carry weight up to 50 pounds up to 10 feet.
  • Regularly push-pull with forces up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly use hands to perform activities involving grasping, turning, holding with forces up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly ascend and descend steps with a height of 18 inches.
  • While seated, frequently look over left and right shoulders with 180 degrees of movement.
  • Frequently bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and sit for extended time.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals.
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
