Duties And Responsibilities
- This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety and operating rules and federal regulations.
- Shall perform all duties required in connection with the operation of commuter trains.
- Promote safe work practices as well as maintains and fosters a safe work environment.
- Duties include but are not limited to customer service, fare inspection, switching, and flagging.
- Notifies proper authorities and prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
- Comply with train orders, train signals, radio communications, and railroad rules and regulations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the train.
- Diagnose minor malfunctions and performs minor maintenance and servicing activities when maintenance personnel are not available.
- Required to take actions and/or making decisions affecting security/well-being of all passengers and crew members.
- Make public address announcements as necessary.
- Work in inclement weather
- Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Must understand basic mathematics.
- Must be able to judge speed/distances of objects/moving parts.
- Applicants must be able to work non-traditional hours.
- Ability to communicate effectively to large groups while prioritizing safety, passenger rail service, on-time performance, and the requirements of the owner
- Required to make logical choices and/or draw logical conclusions.
- Must be knowledgeable on rules, regulations, and/or policies for position.
- Must be General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) qualified or become GCOR qualified within 30 days of hire date
- Must successfully complete training and attain/retain certifications applicable to job
- Familiar with railroad operating practices
- Organized and able to work independently and a team
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
- Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

- Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to one-half mile.
- Maintain balance for an extended period of time while train is in motion.
- Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis.
- Work in a confined access/space environment with a width of 16 inches.
- Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind.
- Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
- Able to tolerate repetitive movements, squatting/bending, and overhead reaching.
- Able to lift up to shoulder height and horizontally transfer up to 35 pounds for a distance up to 10 feet.
- Regularly kneel, bend, squat for extended periods of time.
- Regularly reach overhead.
- Regularly grasp/squeeze equipment with a force up to 20 pounds.
- Regularly ascend/descend a platform with a height of up to 36 inches from the floor.
- Regularly ascend and descend an 8 step ladder while carrying up to 20 pounds.
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals.
- Able to work in a safety sensitive work environment.
