General Summary

As part of Highline College’s Educational Technology department, the Instructional Designer collaborates with faculty and staff to increase student success and reduce equity gaps by creating accessible, engaging, and inclusive technology-enabled teaching and learning experiences. EdTech’s mission is to enable equitable and inclusive learning opportunities through inspired use of educational technology. We value diverse perspectives in the application of digital technologies and in the lived experience of team members.

EdTech consults with faculty, creates professional development, and delivers multimedia production services to support student-centered learning. The Instructional Designer works directly with faculty in academic, technical, English as a Second Language and adult basic education programs to improve course design, delivery, and technology integration.

Currently recruiting for two positions.

Essential Tasks

Equitable Learning Experience Design

  • In collaboration with faculty, apply knowledge of anti-racist and equity-first teaching and instructional design practices, including culturally responsive instructional design, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and accessibility to improve student success in face-to-face, online, hybrid, and hyflex classes, particularly for students from historically underserved groups;
  • Using an equity lens, and informed by disaggregated student success data and faculty input, research, evaluate, and recommend strategies to expand use of technology-enabled teaching and learning practices; collaborate with departments across the college to implement;
  • Apply project management techniques to guide collaborators and drive implementation of technology-enabled teaching and learning initiatives;
  • Support the college response to educational technology and online learning accreditation and regulatory matters, such as Regular and Substantive Interaction.
Faculty Support and Professional Development
  • Create professional development that advances instructors’ understanding and implementation of educational technology, including basic technology skills; assess programming and revise accordingly;
  • Ensure EdTech’s coaching, consulting and learning opportunities for faculty model anti-racist and inclusive teaching strategies;
  • Provide just-in-time and pre-planned coaching and mentoring for faculty as they design classes and implement digital learning strategies;
  • Communicate with faculty and staff to resolve problems, research solutions, consult with vendors, and prepare documentation.
Instructional Design Support for College Initiatives
  • Partner with the Learning and Teaching Center and other departments to provide instructional design and faculty development expertise to a portfolio of college projects, including a Title 3 grant, Guided Pathways, workforce development, and recruitment and retention of adult learners;
  • Develop and implement a coordinated plan to reduce technology barriers and provide technology literacy support to students;
  • Collaborate with the library, bookstore, and others to expand use of low cost and Open Educational Resources, including integration of anti-racist and open education practices into those materials;
  • Support accessibility initiatives to ensure equitable access to instructional materials for students with disabilities.
Professional Development
  • Actively participate in continuing education and professional organizations to extend knowledge of educational technologies and research-based practices in inclusive design, anti-racist pedagogy, and equitable assessment of learning.
College and Community
  • Participate in college and community activities, including equity-focused discussions; represent the college in state, regional, and national activities related to digital learning.
Work Conditions
  • This position may require occasional travel to state, regional, and national meetings;
  • The employee is expected to be on-site three days per week, with an option to work remotely two days per week; flexible hours are available.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree; AND
  • Demonstrated experience implementing equity-first digital learning initiatives designed to close opportunity gaps for historically underserved student populations; AND
  • Demonstrated experience using technology such as a learning management system to support student success; AND
  • Experience designing and teaching online courses.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Education, or related field;
  • Experience providing faculty professional development;
  • Experience teaching and/or developing instructional materials for community college settings;
  • Demonstrated experience engaging faculty in difficult conversations, especially regarding effective teaching of racialized and minoritized populations.
