ABOUT THE ROLE
Holcim US (formerly Lattimore Materials Corp) is adding the position of Driver Captain to each of our fixed plant locations throughout the DFW area. This role will be in place and along with the Plant Foreman, Driver Council Member, Master Trainer, Batcher, Trainer(s), and Mentor Driver will constitute the Leadership Team for their home location. As such we are trying to find the right people who do not already serve as a Driver Council Member, Master Trainer, or Trainer at this time. At smaller plants, however, there may not be enough drivers who meet the qualifications without someone filling multiple leadership roles.
Ultimately, the Driver Captain will be responsible for the safe, efficient and timely loading, delivery, jobsite performance and plant activities of the driving team at their assigned plant. Driver Captains will assist drivers on jobsites and ensure that the team is lined-up, ready-to-go, properly slumped, aware of hazards, following customer instructions, and getting into and out of the wash-our area efficiently. They will address any issues with drivers spending too much time at the washout area, drivers spending time on their cell phones, etc. Driver Captains will assist each other on jobsites or when at plants other than their home plants to improve the performance of the entire team whenever possible.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
The Driver Captain’s responsibilities are outlined below:
- The Driver Captain will clock in with the first driver.
- When the company adopts the shift schedule plan, the Driver Captain will typically clock-in with the first or second shift as those are deemed the most critical to our overall success.
- Where practical – without incurring much if any idle time – the Driver Captain will assist all of the shifts each day with getting in-service, loaded, and out of the plant efficiently.
- If time between shifts or drivers will incur idle time of any significance, the Driver Captain will go ahead and get his truck in-service and begin taking loads.
- On days when possible, the Driver Captain may spot-check shifts that he is not normally assigned to in order to ensure that everyone is performing as they should.
- They will then assist the team – as they come in – with clocking-in on time, pre-tripping their trucks, getting in-service, getting lined up, checking their loads, and getting out of the yards as safely and efficiently as possible.
- The Driver Captain will communicate initial slump and water added information to the Plant Foreman / Batcher so that any necessary adjustments can be made to help with faster, more accurate loading.
- If there are some minor issues, with the trucks, we will have some supply parts and tools at the plants so that the Driver Captains and the Driver can handle those issues without the need to go to the shop.
- If the issue is a down-truck criteria that cannot be handled without a mechanic, the Driver Captain will notify the Plant Foreman and then help the driver get an available truck ready, get them loaded and out of the yard.
- The Plant Foreman will notify dispatch and maintenance as to the issues so that those departments can take necessary action.
- If there is not an available truck, the Driver Captain will communicate with the Plant Foreman and other duties such as: training, truck cleaning, Convergence Learning, Lytx Coaching, or other work at the plant will be assigned to the driver.
- Once the Driver Captain has gotten everyone through the process, they will pre-trip their own truck, get loaded and begin making their deliveries.
- If the team is staggered in and there is a sizeable break between the first group coming, and the balance of the team, the Driver Captain will go ahead and load.
- The Driver Captain will assist the Plant Foreman and Batcher with the overall operation of the plant and ensure that the drivers are productively using their time when waiting to load throughout the day.
- Drums should be rinsed multiple times throughout the day to minimize build-up inside the drum.
- Trucks should be washed throughout the day in an effort to maintain the look and condition of the equipment as well as minimize end-of-day time so that all team members can get home and being their recovery process and spend time with their families.
- When possible, the Driver Captain will help with the End-of-Day process of getting the team, rinsed out, post-tripped, fueled, parked and clocked-out.
- Driver Captains will assist each other on jobsites or when at plants other than their home plants to improve the performance of the entire team whenever possible.
- Driver Captains will also provide leadership and assistance on jobsites in order to ensure that the team is lined-up, ready-to-go, properly slumped, aware of hazards, following customer instructions, and getting into and out of the wash-our area efficiently.
- They will address any issues with drivers spending too much time at the washout area, drivers spending time on their cell phones, etc.
- Driver Captains will assist at any plant that they may happen to be sent into for loading throughout the day.
- Any other duties that support our customer, delivery, quality, operations or personnel initiatives.
